CROW

As an architectural historian with the Alabama Historical Commission, I am researching the background of a prominent early builder in Florence, a city in far northwstern Alabama on the Tennessee River.  The builder's name was Thomas Crow and he lived in Adair County before coming down to Alabama in the early 1830s.  Thomas Crow's wife was Elizabeth Hooks (daughter of David Hooks), and his parents were Thomas, Sr. and Nancy (Donnally) Crow.  They came to Kentucky from Botetourt County, Virginia.

Thomas Crow was a superb craftsman and executed some of the finest Federal-style woodwork left in the state of Alabama -- staircases, mantelpieces, elegant panaled doors, etc.  I have a suspicion that he may have apprenticed with an early Adair County builder before coming to Alabama.

Do your genealogical records contain anything on the Crow, Hooks or related families?  Or perhaps on early housebuilders and craftsmen of Adair County -- probably in the 1810-1830 period?  Any leads you can provide will be greatly appreciated.  Please respond to both my home address and my office address (robert.gamble@preserveala.org).  I am currently having trouble receiving messages on my home computer.  Thanks again!

SEXTON

My great grandfather's name was Gallant Anderson Sexton or G.A. "Mann" Sexton. His mother was Lucy Fannie Crawhorne of Adair County and he was born in March of 1886 or possibly 1885.  Fannie married Thomas D.
Sexton of Metcalfe county on Sept. 28,1895 and they had other children, but G.A. is believed to have been born out of wedlock and his real father is unknown.  In many places he is referred to as "Mann", possibly a
reference to the surname of his real father. His mother's family name appears as Crawhorne on the 1880 census but the name was spelled Crowhorn, Crawthorn, or even Cauthorne in other places.  There is a story that the Mammoth cave property was once owned by a Crawhorne who lost the deed after changing this name to conceal the fact that he had killed someone on a train.  I don't know if this is true.  I am looking for the identity of Gallant Anderson's father. Could it be found in an Adair county court record of guardianship or birth from 1886? Thanks,  Tony Peak, anthonypeak@hotmail.com

CONKEY-GILMORE

DNA Y genotyping has shown our ancestor, John Conkey Gilmore, who lived in Adair County in 1802, to have primarily Native American ancestry. It is possible that his father or grandather married a Gilmore woman and
John Conkey took the Gilmore name in order to live among the white settlers. Does anyone know where marriage records before 1798 might be that might show such a marriage? Thanks for any suggestions. Mary Haire, hair6002@bellsouth.net

AARON

Hello, I'm working on a project to document physicians who have worked in Russell Co., Va. (my home county).   I've identified over 160 of them dating as far back as 1840.   One of them was a Louis Edward Aaron who
worked in Lebanon and Honaker (towns in Russell County), Va., in 1951-52. Dr. Aaron was born 26 March 1916 in Adair Co., Kentucky .   He was a son of George William (or William George) and Hannah S. (Young ) Aaron.   He
had at least three siblings:   Luther Oris, born circa 1910 (called Oris, he also became a physician); Maxine B., born circa 1912; and Mary Ellen, born circa 1919.   George and Hannah married around 1908 as the 1910
census indicates that they had been married for two years.   At that time, they were living in Glens Fork area of Adair Co., Ky., where George was a schoolteacher. By 1920, George and Hannah were in Lyon Co., Ky.

VOILES

My brick wall is David Voiles, bn about 1795 or so, in the east TN area as far as I can tell.  He married Patience Kesterson in Greene Co., TN in 1817 and they had one son named William about 1819.  Both David Voiles and Patience Kesterson are supposed to have died shortly after William's
birth, according to an estate  of Patience's grandmother Kesterson. William married Elizabeth Ward, daughter of Enoch Ward and Sarah Trail in 1843 and they moved from Greene Co., TN through Anderson Co., TN to Fentress Co., TN, with the move taking place in the late 1850's.  The
family tarried in Fentress Co about 10 years or so and appeared in Adair Co. in the 1870's, where William lived for the remainder of his life.  He died there in 1913. If any of this strikes a chord at all, please email me.  Would be glad to hear from anyone connected to the Voiles family in any way.  Glad to share.  Thank you. Helen Davis, helend1939@aol.com

John Arnold Denton 1809-1890 son of John Denton and Elizabeth Nancy Arnold of Garrard County, married circa 1829-1830 Elizabeth Pendleton 9 March 1811-1849. We suspect this marriage occurred in Garrard Adair or Lincoln County, The first four children of this union (John Denton b. Bet 1830-1831,Sarah J. Denton b. 1831, David Richard Denton b.31 December 1832,and Forrest Denton b. 1833) were born in Lincoln County, Kentucky to the best of our knowledge. Seven additional children were born in Lee Township, Platte County, Missouri. Elizabeth Pendleton Denton died we believe in 1849 when John returned to Kentucky and at age 40 married Mary Bargar and had three additional children. He died in Adair County in 1890. Looking for the marriage date and location as well as Elizabeth Pendleton's parents along with John Arnold Denton's
obit. Happy to share ancestral as well as descendancy information that I have on this family.
