The Burton / Shephard Families of Adair County

1. John Mathew (Lincoln) Burton and Ruth Ellen Shepherd.
John Mathew ( Lincoln) Burton, b:16 October 1863, d: 12 June 1939, was the son Zachariah F. Burton & Mary Powell. Ruth Ellen Shepherd, b: 27 July 1860, d:  16 April 1931, was the daughter of James Preston Shepherd & Ruth A Judd.
 
Lincoln & Ellen married, 19 September 1939,  and lived & died on Burton Ridge just behind The Purdy Church. They had 8 children. All events were in Adair Co., Kentucky.

 

 

 
2. Ruth Ellen Shepherd the oldest of 6 children. She was the granddaughter of Andrew Shepherd and Barbra Phillips, Joseph Judd and Nancy Cornwell.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3. John Chrisman Burton, b: 21 OCT 1855, d: 26 March 1928  was the son of Peter Tarter Burton and Nancy Isaac. John married, 28 May 1876, Sarah E. Anderson, b: 08 Sept 1859, d: 24 July 1927, at the age of 47. They had 4 children. They lived on Burton Ridge, in Adair Co., Kentucky. Carolyn Amanda Kimbler, b:1870. d: 1947 was John's 2nd marriage 1912. They had 3 children. They lived on Burton Ridge, in Adair Co., Kentucky.

 

Ruth Judd b: 25 October 1828, d: 3 February 1917 at the age of 88, married, 11 March 1847, James Preston Shepherd, b: 13 May 1825, d: 15 February 1862 at the age of 37 and left Ruth with 6 children. Ruth then married Joseph Bryant. Joseph helped raise the children and they all loved him as a father. He was an outstanding person. Sarah Jane Burton Shepherd, b: 28 March 1861, d: 10 February 1933, was the daughter of Zachariah F. Burton & Mary Powell.
In 1884 she married James Franklin Shepherd who was a brother of Ellen Shepherd. Sarah Jane was a sister of
John Mathew ( Lincoln ) Burton. Both family's children were 1st. double cousins, Sarah Jane lived to be 71.
They all lived and raised their families in Adair Co., Kentucky

 

 

 

 

Thomas Braumlet Burton 70, b: 1861, d: 1931, was the son of John Burton and Sarah F Sullivan. Margaret Elizabeth Burton 65 , b 1863, d: 1928, was the daughter of Cyrenius F and Julia Ann Burton. They had 7 Children. Dorinda, Mary Blaine, John Right, Elijah Milton, Sophia J, Frances and Josie Burton. They all lived on Burton Ridge, in Adair Co., Kentucky

 

1. John Wesley Ferguson 54, b: 11 September 1851, d: 1 July 1906, married Corenthia Amanda Watson 82 b: 18 November 1846, d: 11 May 1929. John Wesley's Father was Rev. John Ferguson of Pike Co., Indiana. His mother was Matilda Jane Humphrey of North Carolina.
 
 

 

 

2. Corenthia Amanda Watson 82 b: 18 November 1846, d: 11 May 1929 married John Wesley Ferguson 54, b: 11 September 1851, d: 1 July 1906, Her father was Rev. Joel H Watson and her mother was Sarah Jones. Corenthia had 11 children.  They lived around Knifley and are one of the Great Families in Adair Co., Kentucky.

 
 

3. Peter Tarter Burton, (b:5 September 1821)(d:1886), married Nancy Isaac

in Adair Co., Kentucky. He was a son of Arthur & Elizabeth Tarter Burton. Nancy Isaac was borne in England. They had 6 Children and are a part of one of the Great Families in Adair Co., Kentucky.
 
 
 
 
4. James Franklin Shepherd is setting with wife Sarah Jane Burton. Standing are Otis & his sister Myrtle Shepherd. There were 9 children. The Shepherd Family is one of the Great Families in Adair Co., Kentucky.
 

 

 

 

 

1. William Holmes (Sugar Billie) & Rosaline Burton was born and raised in KY. They were married October 8th 1882 & had 9 children. They lived to the age of 84 & 89. Sugar Billie's parents were Jesse E. Burton and Pracy Jane Smiley. Rosaline's parents were James Madison Burton & Nancy Elizabeth Lawless.

2. Littleton Marion (Lit) Goode,(b:30 July 1860)(12 May 1952), & Louisa Frances (Ida)  Bottoms,(b: 7 August 1867)(23 March 1930),(m:27 July 1884), had a love affair that lasted through 11 Children and a lifetime. Both born on Casey Creek in Adair Co. Kentucky Another great family who lived in Adair Co., Kentucky
