Adair County Marriages

Adair County News, December 20, 1899

A marriage at the clerk's office last Thursday [Dec. 14th] attracted quite a crowd. The contracting parties were Mr. Richard Roe, of the Elroy section, and Miss Florence McKinney.

It seems that Mr. Roe had met Miss McKinney at her home several times; was very much in love, but had never suggested marriage until they met by chance in Columbia at the above named time.

He observed her in one of our dry good stores, shopping. Approaching her, a proposition to marry at once was made. She accepted, but had no dress for the occasion. That was but the work of a few hours. The outfit was cut off and the young lady conducted to Mrs. Montgomery's dress-making establishment. Four extra hands were put to work, and by 2 o'clock the young lady was ready for the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. E.W. Barnett.

They left immediately to tell the old folks.
