John H. Reynolds Dead

The subject of this notice was born and reared near Columbia, and just before leaving for the Territory* had finished a four year term as jailer of Adair county. The Kiowa * Chronicle says:

J. H. Reynolds was born in Adair county near Columbia, Kentucky, February 16, 1852,** and died in the Sanitarium at Sherman, Texas, at 5:35 p.m., December 24, 1907. He was married to Miss Mary A. Gill in Kentucky, February 10, 1875. He moved with his family to this country in December of 1894, and had been living in Kiowa since March of 1896. He was a prominent business man and leading citizen of this city, being the founder, proprietor and for many years manager of the first hotel in this city, which is today in operation and known as the Reynolds House. In municipal affairs he was a most active and serviceable factor...and was at the time of his death serving his second term as mayor of this city.

* Refers to the Indian Territory. Kiowa is in modern-day Pittsburg County, Okla.

** In the 1860 Adair County, Ky., census record (district 2, hh# 63), he appears as an eight-year-old in the James H. & Elizabeth J. Reynolds household.
