Generation No. 1

1. WILLIAM1 BAILEY, was born between 1680 and 1700 in Saint Peter's Parish, New Kent County, Virginia. He married PHEBE about 1717. She was born between 1695 and 1703. They both died sometime after 1730 in Virginia.


Generation No. 2

2. SAMUEL2 BAILEY (WILLIAM1) was born about 1722 in Virginia, and died May 1796 in Albermarle County, Virginia. He married UNKNOWN about 1740 in Virginia. She was born between 1720 and 1725, and died before 1796 in Albermarle County, Virginia.
On June 10, 1744 Samuel bought 100 acres in Albermarle County, Virginia, as shown in Deed Book 1, page 163. He bought an additional 134 acres on Green Creek, in 1758 , Deed Book 2, page 29. 
He was listed in the Albemarle County, Virginia 1785 Census with 2 White Souls, 2 Dwellings and 2 Other buildings.

In the name of God, amen, I Samuel Bailey, of the county of Albemarle, being in ----- -----
remembrance, but weak in body, do make and ordain this my last will and testement, in manner and form following: Verily first I bequeath my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping that through the m torius oath and sufferings of my great ----- to gain free pardon and forgiveness for all my sins and offenses and my body to the grave to be buried at the behest of my ----- ----- ----- and as for my worldly goods which Almighty God has bestowed on me, I give and bestow them in manner and form following.
Verily first I give the home and plantation wherein I now live unto my son William Bailey and the remaining part of my estate after my debts are paid to be equally divided amongst my surviving children, namely, John Bailey, Lucy Staton, Samuel Bailey, Thomas Bailey, and Mary Lyon, William Bailey, and I leave my son, John Bailey, Capt. Benjamin Harris and Thomas Farrar my executors to execute this my last will and testement and my will is that if my son William Bailey should die without heirs that then the land to go to my son John Bailey's son James Bailey and if he should die without heirs then the land go to John Bailey's son Samuel Bailey.

3. JOHN3 BAILEY (SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1)2 was born about 1740 in Virginia, and died about 1822 in Nelson County, Virginia. He married (1) MARY LYON about 1762 in Albermarle County, Virginia, daughter of Elisha Lyon and Pheobe Nix. She was born about 1744 in Virginia, and died between 1765 and 1771 in Virginia. He married (2) FRANCES LYON December 28, 1772 in Amherst County, Virginia daughter of John and Jean Lyon. She was born about 1756 in Amherst County, Virginia, and died after 1823 in Virginia.
He is shown on the Amherst County, Virginia census of 1783 with 5 Whites and 5 Blacks; the 1785 census with 9 whites; and the 1787 Amherst County, Virginia Tax List "A", First District with himself over 21, 5 Blacks, 4 Horses, 19 Cattle.
He was a signer in 1779 of the following proclamation: 

“Albemarle Declaration 21 Apr. 1779 We whose name are hereunto subscribed
do swear that we renounced and refuse all allegiance to George the King
of Great Britain and that we will be faithful and bear true allegiance
to the Commonwealth of Virginia as a free and independent state.We swear
to oppose and, if discovered, make known to the authorities all treasons
or traitorous conspiracies.. against this or any of the United States of
America So help us God.

WILL of JOHN BAILEY

Dated: March 2, 1821 Proved: October 27, 1823.

In the name of God, Amen. I, John Bailey, Sen., of Nelson Co. and State of Virginia, being of sound mind and memory, and calling to mind the uncertainty of life doth hereby make my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made.
Item. My will and desire is that all my just debts be paid and satisfied by my executors hereinafter named as early after my decease as convenient.
Item. My will and desire is that all my slaves and my 5 lands be divided into five equal lots, and that my sons John Bailey, Jr., Samuel Bailey, Terrisha Bailey, James Bailey, and my daughter, Jane Smith, be entitled each to one fifth part of the whole, or one lot so laid off and
divided it is understood that my beloved wife, Frances Bailey have title to and enjoy the whole during her natural life; and it is further my will that my negro woman, Fanny, shall have the liberty of choosing her master or mistress among my 5 children aforesaid, and that she shall be so taken and received by such master or mistress at valuation and to be accounted for in the allotment aforesaid.
Item. It is further my will and desire that my beloved wife, Frances Bailey, hold and enjoy all the balance and residue of my Estate, both real and personal (after payment of my just debts and funeral expenses) for and during her natural life, and that so soon as may be convenient
after her death, in case she shall be the longest liver, that the whole thereof be sold upon such terms as my exors. who shall be then living shall think most beneficial, and the proceeds thereof divided into 5 equal parts, and that my aforesaid 5 children (to-wit) John Bailey, Jr.,
Samuel Bailey, Terisha Bailey, James Bailey and Jane Smith or their legal representatives in case of the death of either of them have title thereto, and receive and enjoy the same to their use and behoof forever.
Item: It is further my will and desire that my son Elisha Bailey and my daughter Betsy Turner receive no part of my Estate whatever, as I have heretofore given them as much as I think my other children will receive, all of which I have heretofore given them I do hereby ratify and confirm.
Item. I do hereby give and convey unto my 5 said children (to-wit) John Bailey, Jr., Samuel Bailey, Terisha Bailey, James Bailey and Jane Smith, the property herein conveyed to them, to take effect after the death of my said beloved wife, Frances Bailey, a full and complete title to them and their heirs forever.
Item. I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Terrisha Bailey, and my son-in-law Charles Smith, my executors, my beloved wife, Frances Bailey executrix of this my last will and testament, with a reguest that they carry the same into execution. Generation No. 4

4. ELISHA4 BAILEY (JOHN3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1)4 was born November 20, 1763 in Albermarle County, Virginia, and died November 30, 1841 in Adair County, Kentucky. He married HANNAH GAY December 19, 1782 in Albermarle County, Virginia, daughter of THOMAS GAY and MARGARET. She was born March 11, 1764 in Virginia, and died about 1845 in Adair County, Kentucky. Elisha was listed on the 1787 Albemarle County, Virginia Tax List, as being above 21 years old, then he moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky about 1788, where he was listed on the Tax List from 1789 to 1800. When Adair County was formed in 1802, Elisha was listed as paying taxes on property on Butler’s creek. The 1806 and 1810 Tax List also has him on Butler’s Creek. Elisha acquired a Land Grant in 1801 in what is now Adair county, Kentucky. It was for 100 Acres and was described as being near Russell Creek, the county line, Pettits Fork, A. Scaggs property, Big Creek and Butlers Fording. He also bought two lots in town, then sold them in 1809 (Deed Book B, page 210). He bought 280 acres near the clefts of Russell Creek in Adair County, Kentucky in 1822, then sold 100 acres of this land in 1837. He served eight months in the Virginia Army during the Revolutionary War, serving under Layfayette and General Washington at the battle of York where General Cornwallis surrendered. He applied for a pension in 1833, detailing his war record and turning in a Bible page to prove his pension claim. According to the Daughter’s of the American Revolution Patriot Grave Book, Elisha is buried in the Clear Springs Methodist Church Cemetery, but there is no gravestone now visible with his name on it. 
Elisha was listed on the 1832 Adair County Presidential Voter List for Andrew Jackson and in the 1810 to 1840 census records of Adair.

In the name of God Amen, I Elisha Bailey of Adair County Kentucky do certify this my last will and testament revoking all others.
First I do give and bequeath to my daughter Betsy and son Benjamin, jointly my farm or tract of land I now live on containing one hundred and eighty acres with all appurtenances in consideration of them taking care and supporting me and my wife while we may live. My two
slaves, Majors & Judea, I do manumit and give them their freedom at the death of my wife. It is my wish that the said two slaves may live on the place or make it their home while my daughter Betsy & son Benjamin and them agree and they behave prudently and if they cannot agree they, Majors & Judea, must shift for themselfs. Further, I desire at the death of my wife, all my property not herein named, shall be sold and the proceeds thereof to be equally divided among all my children. I wish Cornelius Gay to have a young horse "beast" reserved
for him out of some of my young colts before any sale takes place and for the purposes heretofore stated, I constitute my daughter Betsy Blaine and son Benjamin Bailey my
Executrix & Executor to this my last will and testament.

5. THOMAS T.5 BAILEY (ELISHA4, JOHN3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1)6 was born April 3, 1784 in Albermarle County, Virginia, and died 1856 in Adair County, Kentucky. He married MARY ATKINSON July 12, 1809 in Adair County, Kentucky, Book 1, Page 26. The marriage bond states that she is the daughter of ABSOLOM ATKINSON. She was born about 1789 in Virginia, and died after 1857. 
Thomas sold 184 acres of land in 1824 (Deed Book F, page 79) and 66 acres in 1829 (Deed Book H, page 532). This was probably land left Polly by her father. 
Thomas was listed in the 1832 Adair County Presidential Voter List for Andrew Jackson, the 1810 Adair County, KY Tax List on Butler's Creek and the 1820 to 1850 census of Adair.

She married WILLIAM DAWSON July 24, 1806 in Adair County, Kentucky. He was born July 18, 1786, and died between 1823 and 1850. They were listed on the 1810 Adair County, Kentucky Census.

7. SAMUEL BARBER5 BAILEY (ELISHA4, JOHN3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1) was born January 19, 1796 in Lincoln County, Kentucky, and died January 8, 1849 in Grundy County, Missouri. He married ELIZABETH DAUGHTERY June 23, 1822 in Madison County, Alabama. She was born between 1795 and 1805, and died between 1837 and 1890. His great granddaughter, Grace D. Bailey was living in Louisiana in 1952.

8. HIRAM A. H.5 BAILEY (ELISHA4, JOHN3, SAMUEL2, WILLIAM1) was born August 18, 1798 in Lincoln County, Kentucky and married MARTHA HARDAWAY GILL November 18, 1830 in Adair County, Kentucky, Book 1, page 123. She was the daughter of HARRISON GILL and CLARISSA RIVES and was born February 15, 1814 in Bedford County, Virginia. Hiram bought 70 acres of land on Russell Creek in 1837 and sold it in 1849 (Deed Book N, page 360). He voted for Andrew Jackson in the1832 presidential election and was listed in the 1840 and 1850 census of Adair, then moved his family, except for Robert and Eliza Jane, to Crawford County, Arkansas about 1859. He died 1868 in Van Buren, Crawford County, Arkansas and Martha died there in 1878. Hiram and Martha are both buried in the Gill Cemetery in Van Buren, Arkansas.

HIRAM SOCRATES FORTUNATUS JACOB BABE BAILEY, born September 18, 1855, Adair County, Kentucky; died January 13, 1941, Crawford County, Arkansas; married MARY TENNESSEE GARRETT, 1876, Crawford County, Arkansas; born between 1855 and 1860; died between 1890 and 1945, Arkansas. The story is that all of his brothers and sisters were given a chance to name him, thus all of the names.

MURRAY October 1, 1840 in Adair County, Kentucky, Book 2-6, pg 98. He was born 1808 in Tennessee, and died after 1880 in Adair County, Kentucky. They are listed 1850 - 1870 on the Adair census.

Prominent Craycraft Man Succumbs to Ill Health 
Sidney Bailey, 77 years of age, died late Wednesday night at his home near Craycraft after having been in declining health for a lengthy period. 
The deceased, who is a prominent farmer in the Craycraft community, is survived by his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Nannie Murrell of Illinois; Mrs. William Overstreet, of Lebanon; and Mrs. Ivan Cabbell, and three sons, Robert, Buford and Elbert Bailey. 
Funeral services and burial were conducted Friday morning by Rev. Oto Wolford of Freedom Church. Interment in Freedom Church Cemetery.

MRS. MARY BAILEY DIES AT HOME NEAR OZARK
Funeral Services and Burial Held Friday At Freedom Church
Mrs. Mary E. Bailey, 77, was found lying dead across the bed at her home near Ozark, at 4
o'clock Thursday afternoon by her son, Elbert Bailey, who lived nearby. It was thought that she had suffered a stroke of paralysis for she was apparently as well as usual when Mr. Bailey
stopped at her residence earlier in the day. She was the widow of Mr. Sidney Bailey,
well-known citizen of Adair County, who died two years ago. Mrs. William Overstreet, a daughter, and Mr. Overstreet, who were making their home with Mrs. Bailey, also stated that
she was apparently feeling very well when they left for Columbia early in the morning.
Mrs. Bailey was one of the most beloved and respected citizens of the Ozark community
and her sudden death was a shock to the family and friends. She was an active member of the
Methodist Church. She was born and reared in Adair County and before her marriage on
October 13, 1881, was Miss Mary E. Conover, daughter of the late Thomas J. and Susana
Bryant Conover, prominent citizens of the Ozark section.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Sara Overstreet and Mrs. Lula Cabbell of Adair
County, and Mrs. S. H. Murrell of Illinois; three sons, Prof. Robert J. Bailey, Albert Bailey
and Elbert Bailey, all of whom live in Adair; two brothers, William and Forrest Conover, and
the following sisters: Mrs. Rosalee Haynes, of Russell County; Mrs. Georgia Redmon, Mrs.
Ursla Roy. Mrs. Mattie Bailey and Mrs. Patricia Bryant.
Funeral services were held at Freedom Church at 2:30 Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev.
H. J. Conover. Interment was in the Freedom Cemetery.

Forest Elbert Bailey, 63-year-old retired farmer, died Sunday morning at his home in the
Oak Grove community following a long illness.
The son of Robert S and Mary Conover Bailey, he was a member of the Clear Springs
Methodist Church.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Combest Bailey, he is survived by a son, Orville Bailey; a
grandson, Carl Bailey; a brother, Buford Bailey of Sano; three sisters, Mrs. Ivan Cabbell of 
Sano, Mrs. Bill Overstreet of Columbia and Mrs. Sam Murrell of St. Joseph, Ill.
Funeral services were conducted on Monday at 2 p.m. at Freedom Baptist Church by the
Rev. Clifford Spurlock with burial in Freedom Cemetery. Funeral arrangements were handled
by Grissom, Maupin & McKinney Funeral home.

Mrs. Mary Pearl Bailey, of Russell Springs, passed away Sunday, August 31, in the
Burkesville Hospital after several days illness.
She is survived by one son, E. O. Bailey; three brothers, Willie, John and Malcom Combest;
one sister, Mrs. Rose Lucks and four grandchildren.
The Reverends Jewell Latham and Henry Popplewell conducted the funereal service
Tuesday, September 2, at the Freedom Separate Baptist Church. Interment was in the church
cemetery, with Grissom, Maupin and Heskamp Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers were nephews of Mrs. Bailey.

Mrs. Lula Cabbell, age 76 years of Sano Route, Columbia, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, January 16, 1980 at 9:55 p. m. at the Taylor County Hospital after an illness.
She was the daughter of the late Sid and Mary Ellen Conover Bailey of Adair County and the widow of the late James Ivan cabbell who preceded her in death on December 30, 1969.
Mrs. Cabbell is survived by one daughter, Miss Janet Cabbell of Sano Route, Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Willie Overstreet, Sano Route, Columbia and Mrs. Sam Murrell, St. Joseph, Illinois; three nephews, Darrell Overstreet, Columbia, Orville Bailey, Russell Springs, and Jerry Murrell, St. Joseph, Illinois.
Mrs. Cabbell was a member of the Clear Springs United Methodist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 18, 1980 at 10 a. m. at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home with Reverend John Shepherd of Glasgow officiating. Interment in the Freedom Cemetery.
