James A. (Dick) Stout was the eldest son of James (Jim, also called Red) and Tennie Stout. He worked at the coal tipple and at the Bon Commissary in the early thirties. He married Martha Hinkle, one of the Hinkle twins. They had one son.

Dick moved to High Splint in 1934 or 1935 and worked in the Commissary there as grocery department manager. Around 1941 he and Wallace Boyd bought a super market in Clinton, Tennessee, owned by a “Brick Top” Nicholson, who as store manager and Charlie Jones brother-in-law. “I give Mr. Jones credit for getting the trade done. He was doing Mr. Nicholson a favor. He wanted out and doing Dick and Wallace a favor. They wanted in and they were young, ambitious men. After staying in Clinton for five or six years, they (Dick and Wallace) bought or started a good-sized super market in Kingsport, Tennessee. They operated that super market for several years and Wallace Boyd bought Dick Stout out. Wallace retired and was advisor to his son who managed the market.

Wallace Boyd married Nettie Lewis Jones, daughter of Professor Gorman Jones and sister to Mrs. Eugene Siler. Dick kept busy selling cars for a Chrysler dealership in Kingsport.”
