THE McWHORTER FAMILY TREE (Note: They symbol (&) is to be read "who married.") In the early days of Casey County Patrick Hites and the Portmans came from Virginia through Lincoln County into Casey. Hites and his party settled upon the creek known by the name above Yosemite, east of the Randolph home, while the Portmans settled around Green River Church. One John McWhorter and brother Robert came into the county from Mississippi. Robert married Julianna Royalty and John married Polly Emily (Betsey) Hites. To this latter union were born the following children: George who ran away from home at the age of seventeen and went to Texas; Robert married Martha Gadberry (their children were Minnie, Kate, and Willie); Bettie married John Jones (their children were Robert & Sophia Carpenter; Lizzie & Wallace Sharp; George & Ella Bransom): John and Lucy were never married, and Polly Ann married Dave Toms (children of this union were Charles, John, and Willie); James McWhorter married Mary Sweeney, and to this union were born the following children: Charley, Jorden, Butler, Bettie, Mealey, and Clay. Charley married Jensey Coulter, and to this union were born the fol- lowing children: Ethel & Estel Elliott; James who married Florence Neal; Willie & Allie Moran; Babe who married Nina Lucas; and Flor- ence who was unmarried. Clay married Joan Adams (son Mat); Jordan was a bachelor, Butler married and moved to Illinois. Bettie mar- ried Mat Horton, and Permelia married James Estes. Willie McWhorter, son of Robert and Martha Gadberry, married Mary Elliott, and to this union were born the following children: Nancy, John, Agnes, Edith, Edwin E. The children of Robert and Julianna Royalty were Frank, Jesse, Artie, Emily, Sallie, Betsey, Courtney, and John Hanson & Deborah Bastin (children: Will Everett & Bertha Jones; Glance & Gladys Kelsay; Emma & J. T. Short; Marshall & Stella Jones.
