THE TOMS TREE (Note: The symbol (&) is to be read "who married.") Two brothers, William and Washington Toms, came into Casey County and were the first settlers in the Trace Fork section. These two brothers had married two sisters who were distant relatives, Susan and Elizabeth Toms. To William and Susan were born Moletus who married Isiah Thomas; Adison who married Eliza; Sarah Lizzie who married Wm. Marples; and James; Grandison; Bettie; and Carol who married Mary Gilpin (children: Ida who married T. Hadley, Rosa, Lurlie, and Ethridge); and John C. & Elizabeth French. To this union were born Oscar, Marion, Ollie, Ellen and French. Oscar married Ada Rayborn (children: Otis, Cecil, Geneva, Ray, Jessie, and John). To Marion and Lula and Minnie Gilpin, his first and second wives, were born Kirby, Ermie, Hattie, Ira, Dessie, Roscoe, Fred, Bettie. Ollie married Crit McDonald; Ellen & The. Austin; French & Tiona Roberts (children: Murl, Mavis Kissler, Erskin, and Thressa). The other brother, Washington, had the following children: Susan, Emiline, Isaetta and Francis were not married; Nancy Ann married F. Tartar; and Jas. Monroe married Mary J. Thomas (children: A.C. who married Bettie Bastin; Geo. H. married first Emma Moore, and second Nannie Grooms; Susan Elizabeth who married M.G. Hansford; Etta and W.J. did not marry; Ray married Nora Coffey). To George H. were born Washington, Elmer R., and Mae. To A.C. and Bettie were born Cleffie, Ray, and Thelma. To Ray and Nora were born Jas. R., Mary E., and Charles. Dear Mr. Wilson, My name is Bobby Tomes, Campbellsville, Ky. In your Toms family tree it says two Bros. were the first Toms in Ky. William Toms [abt.1700-1829] paid taxes in Ky. from 1794-1829. In his will he left his brother Alexander Tomes [1777-1834] his land. This is from his will in the Casey Co. Courthouse 11 Aug. 1829. Alexander was married to Nancy Graves in 1798 in Albermarle Co. Va. They had 3 sons,William Toms [ 1800-before 1850],Washington Toms [1805- ], and Ira H Tomes[1819-1856]. Ira H Tomes married Matilda Vandiver Their son David Tomes [1848-1935] was my GG father. After 1856 he lived with his grandmother, Sarah Vandiver. Contributed by Bobby Tomes
