Posted 04/20/2013 Surname: Bruce/Holbert

My brick wall relates to the family legend of the Indian ancestor.  Any picture of my father leaves no doubt he is a descendant of a Native American.  The questions arise with respect to documentation of the tribe and pinpointing the individual.  I have definitely traced the Bruce family to Gallatin, Kentucky through census and marriage records.  My father was Louis Ernest Bruce; his father was Luther Bruce; Luther's father was Thomas Jefferson Bruce and his mother was Harriet Ann Holbert - both of Gallatin in the mid 1800s. If any of the family stories are even close to truth, Harriet is the original Indian.  Some family stories say she was from the Miami Tribe, some say it could be another, possibly Shawnee.  Harriet's father was John, and as best I can determine her mother was Mary Ann Alcorn, again from Kentucky. I'm not looking for such documentation that could lead to some sort of entitlement... just some answers or confirmation even if it's from someone else's family legend. Any help or pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, McClure,

Seems like everyone's brick wall in Gallatin County is locating burial records and/or location of early cemeteries/ family plots.  I've not located burials for any of my Goins, Jackson, or Ray ancestors.  All lived in Gallatin County, some on Craig's Creek since early 1800's. Charles Goins, a Rev War veteran, died in August 1857, age 104.  His wife Elizabeth died before 1870, possibly in her 100's also. Moses Jackson, a Rev War veteran, died in May 1821, around age 61.  His wife Chritina died about 1851, around age 90. William Ray, died around 1830, age unknown. Believe he had a brother John, who died in 1834, Sangamon County, IL.  William Ray was a bondsman for his daughter Susanna's marriage to George Jackson (son of Moses) in November 1814, in Warsaw. Does anyone have any info beyond what is currently published? Bogardus's work and the headstone transcription project. Would like to locate family bibles, land records, diaries, etc, might help determine where our oldest Gallatin County ancestors were buried...Greg A. Bennatt,

I am looking for information about my great, great, great grandfather, whose name was James Levell. We know from U.S. Census records that he lived in Gallatin County from at least 1830 to 1860. We also know from these records that he was born in Kentucky in 1807. He was married to a woman
whose maiden name was Agnes Cox. We know nothing regarding James' or Agnes' parents. They had at least six children, among them my great, great grandfather Andrew Anderson Levell. Our family's oral history says that James Levell was shot and killed about 1860 in a family argument by
a man named Charles Tandy, brother of Andrew Levell's wife. It is probable that James Levell's death occurred in Gallatin County in 1860. Would like to know if there could possibly be records or newspaper accounts that would provide additional information about his parents.  His oldest son, John J. Levell, died in Gallatin County on April 4, 1870, so we know the family ties to Gallatin County continued beyond his death. Can you offer any suggestions as to how I might try to research his death, i.e. newspaper accounts, police records, etc., or where I might look for burial records? Does anyone have any information and pictures of the Gallatin County Cannery. The cannery was located behind the old high school in what later in about 53-54 became the music department. It was a modern cannery for the day. It contained a hot pack line where the individual doing the canning placed their green beans in 28 oz cans. The cans then traveled down  the line where they were blanched with steam and the cans sealed. There were 4 pressure cookers each able to hold a about 100 cans. The last person to use the cannery was a lady named Mrs. Harmon in 1951. She canned about 100 cans of tomatoes and a couple hundred cans of green beans. Posted 1/22/2006 Surnames: RALSTON

I have always been told that my Ralston line can be located in Gallatin Co KY.  I have not found this to be true. I descend from John Ralston and Sarah Brenton Ralston. John being born 1803 in Westmoreland Co, PA near Hannastown.  Sarah was born ca. 1810 in Nicholas Co KY.  They married Aug. 21, 1827 in Nicholas Co KY and had 13 Children.  This family after the death of Sarah's step-father, William Hopkins died, they removed to Boone Co IN. for a few years.  IN the spring of 1855 they removed to Trimble Co KY and remained there until John's death in 1872-75. He is buried in the Ralston Cemetery on Morton's Ridge in Trimble Co Ky.  Sarah, however, was alive in 1880 and was in the household of her younger son, Richard, in Trimble Co KY.  Richard and his family had moved to Stoddard Co Mo around 1881.  I do not know if Sarah had died and then Richard moved, or if Sarah went with him.  Richard had a sister, Livonia Ralston, born 1837 in KY, who was listed in each census as being deaf and dumb, insane, a pauper.  In the court records of Oldham co KY  a jury of 12 men found Livonia to be insane and not physically or mental capable of caring for herself.  A yearly sum was appointed to a William Morgan who was her brother in law to care for her.  However, never have I located Livonia living in the household of Mr. Morgan.  So, Livonia just disappeared.  I do not know if she went with Richard to Mo.  She is not listed in Richard's wife's (Rosa) household.  Richard died between 1881-1900 as he is not listed in the 1900 census with Rosa.  Sarah was living in 1880 and at the time Livonia's court appearance.  I have been wondering for 25 years what happened to Sarah and Livonia. I was wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the Ralston/Rolston family that may have been in Gallatin Co before maybe going into Nicholas Co Ky.   The mystery continues. Any help with this line will be appreciated, Sue Reid

Looking for photograph of house known as the Old Brick in Steele's Bottom, Warsaw, Kentucky.  Does anyone know a historian, architect historian, family member or friend who may know or be related to the Steeles or Stewarts?  It seems the house known in my family as the "Old Brick" was owned by the Steele/Stewart family.  Apparently Stewart descendants still reside on the property.  My mother recalls visit this rather palatial two story residence in the 1930's and 1940's.  I believe the house no longer stands on the property.  I'll gladly pay for copying charges, CD and/or postage. Thanks, Christy

Posted 6/25/05 Surnames: Romans / Foster

My grandma was Elva Mae Romans b. Jan. 18,1904. I know her parents were John Isaac Romans and Anna Pearl Foster (per her death certificate).  Elva Romans was a resident of Gallatin County at the time of her death in 1984, however, she is buried in Owen County cemetery. I am assuming that she was born in Owen County, yet have no proof of this- only have her death certificate with her parents listed. She married Wm. Albert Starks, had many children with him, then some time following his death she married Robert Gayle Marksberry. I am looking for more information on John Isaac Romans and Anna Pearl Foster.  Can you help? Thank you, Nancy Starks

Posted 6/26 Surnames: Glenn

Perhaps someone can give me some advice.  My gg Grandfather was John Glenn and I am trying to find his birthplace and parents name.  I know some things for sure.  He was born 26 Oct 1797.  He says in census, Ohio. His children say Kentucky. He fought in the War of 1812 as a substitute for a Mr Joseph McCann.  He enlisted in Louisville and served as Pvt in Capt Holt's Co KY Militia  10 Nov 1814 -10 May 1815.  He was discharged in Gallatin County, on 10 May 1815.
(Bill Davis wrote.. There was a Joseph McCann in Gallatin County (now Carroll County).  In 1799  a John Glenn was a witness to a deed of Martin Hawkins to Christina McNair, Gallatin Deed Book A-1, page 130.  Perhaps this Glenn was the father of your John Glenn.) Any help would really be appreciated! Dean Glenn

Any suggestions on how to get any more information on this family.  It has two basic connections.  A whole lot more than I have ever come across.  John Glenn, the son that served in the War of 1812 was discharged in Gallatin County May 10, 1815.  The additional clue is that Joseph McCann was also there at one time. I appreciate your help. This is really my "Brick Wall". Thanks, Dean Glenn

I've "rescued" the original marriage affidavit and certificate for Elijah SWANGO and his bride Mary Ellen WALTERS both of Gallatin County, Kentucky who were married on the 2nd of January 1868 at the home of Oliver HAMILTON. The officiating minister was Benjamin TILLER and the witnesses were Oliver HAMILTON, F.M. GRAHAM, Patrick WELDON, and Harrison FURNISH.
