Lola Usher

 

Lola M. Usher, 85, of Fort Myers, FL, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Hope Hospice Health Park in Fort Myers.  She was a native of Frankfurt, Germany and formerly of Smithfield.  She was a former shoe sales person for many years and retired as a tobacco inspector with Lorillard Tobacco Company after 30 years.  She was the daughter of the late Emil and Wilhelmine Stappenbeck Fleischauer.

 

She is survived by two daughters: Heidi Tingle and husband, Jon, Fort Myers, FL and Inge Scanlon and husband, Richard, Louisville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

 

Memorial services were held at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 15th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.  Dr. Dave Charlton, Pastor of the New Castle Baptist Church, officiated.

Granville L. Vaughn

 

Granville L. Vaughn, 70, of New Castle, died Thursday, October 9 at the Jewish Hospital, Louisville.

 

He retired a Police Chief of New Castle with 24 years of service.  He was a native of Jefferson County, a retired owner and operator of a grocery store and a member of the New Castle Methodist Church.

 

Mr. Vaughn had been City Judge, a Town Board member, a former member of the New Castle Lions Club, and organizer and sponsor of one of the area’s first Little League Baseball teams.  He was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and on D-Day landed on Omaha Beach.  During his military career, he was awarded Five Battle Stars and the Silver and Bronze Arrowheads for the D-Day Invasion.

 

He is survived by his wife, Martha Crawley Vaughn, New Castle; his mother: Sarah Vaughn, Louisville; two daughters: Mrs. Kenneth (Sarah) Clark, Shelbyville and Mrs. Ronnie (Peggy) Bryant, Franklinton; six sons: Pat Vaughn, Pewee Valley, Dennis Vaughn, New Castle, Paul Vaughn, Louisville, Mark Vaughn, New Castle, Jimmy Vaughn, New Castle and Vincent Vaughn, New Castle; one sister: Margaret V. Willette, Louisville; and ten grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12th from Prewitt’s Funeral Home, New Castle.  Rev. Barclay Brown, Pastor of the New Castle United Methodist Church, officiated.  Interment was in the New Castle Cemetery.

Nancy Ivers Wallace

 

Nancy Ivers Wallace, 87, of DeBAry, FL, died on Thursday, December 31, 2009, at Florida Hospital Fish memorial in orange County, Florida.  She was born in Henry County, the daughter of the late Clifford and Syble Sewell Ivers.  She was a former communications consultant, a Kentucky Colonel and a member of the First Baptist Church in DeBary.

 

She is survived by four sons: Larry Wallace, DeBary, FL, Marvin Wallace, Waynesville, NC, Rick Wallace, Danville and Jim Wallace, Prospect; two daughters: Elsie Logsdon, Radcliff and Denise Wall, Jemison, AL; one sister: Mary Frances Broughton, Pleasureville; fourteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her husband: Ordis Dow Wallace; three brothers: William Floyd (Buddy) Ivers, Jay C. Ivers and Roy Thomas Ivers and one sister: Claudia Bailey.

 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 5th at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Charles LeCompte officiated.  Interment was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Lane Warren

 

Lane L. Warren, Sr., 75, of New Castle, died Wednesday, November 11, 2009, at Homestead Nursing Center in new Castle.  He was a farmer and the son of the late James Washington and Letha Virginia Logan Warren.

 

He is survived by two daughters: Rose O’Neil, Louisville and Judy Ison and husband, Terry, Pendleton; two sons: Lane Warren, Jr. and wife, Donna, New Castle and Ricky Warren and wife Phyllis, Sanders; one brother: Murrell Rodgers, Arizona and eight grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife: Alma Corine Mahoney Warren.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, November 14th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.  Rev. Nick Coleman of Sulphur officiated.  Interment was in the Franklinton Cemetery.

Charlie Washburn

 

Charlie Washburn, 71, of Lockport, died Tuesday, February 9, 1982 at the King’s Daughters Hospital, Shelbyville.

 

He is survived by his wife: Rosie Washburn, Lockport; three daughters: Stella Winters and Rosie Mae Washburn, both of Lockport and Pauline Downey, Eminence; three sons: Russell Washburn, Lockport, Joe Washburn, Eminence and Charlie Washburn, Frankfort; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter and one brother: Grover Washburn.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 12th at the Thomas Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Rev. Eugene Webster officiated.  Interment was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

 

 

Viola Washburn

 

Viola J. Washburn, 82, of Pleasureville, died Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange.  She was born in Bloomington, IL, the daughter of the late James William and Susie Alice Kindred Burnett.  She was a homemaker, a farmer and a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.

 

She is survived by her husband, Uley T. Washburn, Sr., Pleasureville; one son: Uley T. Washburn, Jr., and wife, Vicki, Shelbyville; two daughters: Eva Delores Cooper and husband, Harold, Frankfort and Janet Marie Washburn, Pleasureville; three granddaughters; two step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by fourteen brothers and sisters.

 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 11th at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Rev. Brad Bridgman, Pastor of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, officiated.  Interment was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Richard Watkins

 

Richard Watkins, 90, of Smithfield, president of the Bank of Oldham County, died at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Kings Daughters Hospital, Shelbyville.

 

He operated the Smithfield Milling Company for more than 65 years before retiring in 1957.  He was a member of the Eminence Methodist Church.

 

Mr. Watkins was president of the Bank of Smithfield until it merged with the Bank of Oldham County, in 1935.  He then was named vice president of the bank, becoming president in 1946.

 

Survivors include a daughter: Mabel Stevens, West Palm Beach, FL; two sons: Price and Corliss Watkins, both of Smithfield; a sister: Etta Pyle, Orlando, FL; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

 

Funeral services were conducted at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Ricketts Funeral Home, Eminence. Rev. J. B. Hahn, Pastor of the Eminence Methodist Church and the Rev. G. R. Thomas, officiated.  Burial was in the Smithfield Cemetery.

W. T. Watkins

 

W. T. Watkins, of Franklin County, died April 5, 1913, after an illness of five months of consumption.  W. T. Watkins was born December 7, 1840, and was married to Sarah Land on September 7, 1862.  Of this union eleven children were born – seven of whom are living – L. T., Abe, J. E. and I.L. Watkins; Mrs. E. L. Thurman, Mrs. Matt Mosehart and Mrs. N. F. Peyton.

 

W. T. Watkins united with the Baptist Church in Lebanon in 1860, of which he remained a consistent member and faith servant until je was called to his reward.  Mr. Watkins lived the past fifty years in the same house where he and his children began the battles of life.

Richard Webb

 

Funeral services for Richard Webb, 78, who died at his home on Sunday night after a short illness, were held at the home at 2:00 o’clock on Tuesday afternoon by the Rev. H. W. Elliott, with burial in the Campbellsburg Cemetery.

 

Surviving Mr. Webb are, his wife: Betty Abbott Webb; one daughter: Mrs. James S. Moore; four sons: Irvin, Bryan, Eugene and William Webb, three grandchildren and two sisters: Mrs. James Ramsey and Miss Jennie Webb.

Everett Weidekamp

 

Everett Teddy Weidekamp, 75, of New Castle, died Tuesday, November 10, 2009.  He was a U. S. Army Veteran, a truck driver for the state for twenty years, a former Henry County Deputy Sheriff and Jailer and a member of the New Castle Methodist Church.

 

He is survived by his wife: Nancy Roberts Weidekamp, Shelbyville; three sisters: Wilana Roberts, New Castle, Doris Ann Gregory, Frankfort and Donna Payton, Port Royal; five brothers: Leland Payton, Pleasureville, Hubert P. “Tap” Payton and Maurice “Squeak” Payton, both of Frankfort, Royse Payton and Tom Payton, both of Port Royal.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 13th.  Rev. Gary Polston, Pastor of the New Castle United Methodist Church, officiated, assisted by Rev. Corky Klingenfus.  Interment was in the New Castle Cemetery.

Laverne Welsh

 

Laverne Roberts Welsh, 82, of Bedford, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Signature Health Care Center in Bedford after a long illness.  She was the daughter of the late Marion C. and Eula Mae Simpson Roberts and a member of the Sulphur Methodist Church.

 

She is survived by her sister: Frankie Heightchew, New Castle; and one grandson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb Welsh and one son, Herbert “Sonny” Welsh.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July, 25th, at Ransdell Funeral Home, Bedford.  Rev. Ferrell Davis officiated.  Interment was in the Moffett Cemetery, Milton.

Fannie Wentworth

 

Fannie Miles Wentworth, 83, died at 12:00 o’clock Saturday at the home of her son, Herman Wentworth, in Pleasureville.

 

Besides her son, she is survived by two daughters: Mrs. Bertie Shearer, Carrollton and Mrs. Ed Roberts, Louisville.

 

Funeral services were conducted at the Grubridge Church at 2:30 o’clock Sunday afternoon with burial in the Grubridge Cemetery.

Wallace Wentworth

 

Wallace “Cob” Wentworth, 73, of Bagdad, died Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville.  He was born in Shelby County, the son of the late Edgar and Dorothy Campbell Wentworth.  He had worked as a tree trimmer and farmer and was a member of the Lebanon Baptist Church.

 

He is survived by four brothers: Jerry, Glynn, Wayne and Doug Wentworth, all of Bagdad; two sisters: Bessie Cook and Kay Wallace, both of Bagdad; and several nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by five brothers: Scotty, R. J., William, Wesley and Willard Wentworth and one sister: Agnes Thornton.

 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30th at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Bro. Darren Wolford, Remnant Baptist Church, officiated.  Interment was in the Lebanon Church Cemetery.

Leona West

 

Leona “Sue” Thompson West, 71, of Bagdad, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Baptist Hospital Northeast.  She was a native of Henry County, an employee of K-Mart in Louisville and the daughter of the late Samuel and Ethel Eddins Thompson.

 

She is survived by one daughter: Nancy Wheatley, Bagdad; three sisters: Anna Belle Wentworth, LaGrange, Delores Powell, Turners Station and Sherrill Welch, Gestville; four brothers: Lawrence Thompson, Pewee Valley, Elmer Thompson, Bethlehem, Bruce Thompson, Milford, OH and Bill Thompson, Louisville; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters and two step-grandsons.

 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 4th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.  Rev. Carl Rucker, of Campbellsburg, officiated.  Interment was in the Thompson-Coppersmith Cemetery, Gestville.

Dick White

 

Dick Devon White, 84, of Louisville, died Wednesday, August 19, 2009, after a lengthy illness.  He was a WWII Navy Air Corps Veteran, retired after 38 years of service as Head Safety Engineer of Appliance Park, former deacon of New Castle Baptist Church, a member of the Westport Road Baptist Church, Louisville, and Calvary Baptist Church in Englewood, FL.  He was also a certified safety professional, a licensed professional safety engineer, a member of the American Legion and a Kentucky Colonel.

 

He is survived by his wife: Joyce White; his daughter: Judy Pessolano and husband, Bob; his son: Dr. Steven White and wife, Debbie; one sister: Patricia Reid, Thoroid, Ontario and six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held Saturday, August 22nd at the Owen Funeral Home, Jeffersontown.  Interment was in the Cave Hill Cemetery.

Sallie White

 

Sallie Bet “Betsy” White, 77, of Shelbyville, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Jewish Hospital in Shelbyville.  She was a member of the Shelby Christian Church.

 

She is survived by her son: Charles White, Jr., Shelbyville; three daughters: Paula “Cookie” Medlin, Smithfield, Betsy “Reedie” Lefler and Mary Thames, both of Shelbyville; eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles White, Sr., one son, William Taylor White, one foster son, Chester Gentry and one grandson.

 

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 7th at Shannon Funeral Home, Shelbyville.  Rev. Steve Boyd officiated.  Interment was in the Grove Hill Cemetery.

Barbara Sue Willard

 

Barbara Sue Willard, 54, of Shelbyville, formerly of New Castle, died Friday, January 29, 2010, at Jewish Hospital, Shelbyville.  She was a member of the Cropper Baptist Church and was a nurse (LPN) at Homestead Nursing Center for more than fifteen years. 

 

She is survived by her husband: Greg Willard, Shelbyville; her father: Andy Broughton, Stanford; her mother: Onida Montgomery Broughton Hall, Shelbyville; two sons: Eric and Stephen Willard, both of Shelbyville; one stepson: Michael Willard, Eminence; one daughter: Samantha Miller, Frankfort; one step-daughter: Melissa Willard, New Castle; two brothers: Andy Broughton, Jr., Conway, SC and Buster Broughton, Salem, IN; four sisters: Linda Miller, Baltic, OH, Judy Brooks Bohannon, Cathy Hedges and Carolyn Grubb, all of Shelbyville; father-in-law: A. C. Willard, Loretto and mother-in-law: Frank Pippin, Louisville; one grandson: Jakob Allen Powell and several nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by one son, Shane Willard and one brother, Jackie Broughton.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 1st, at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Rev. Jim Cavender, Pastor of the Cropper Baptist Church, officiated.  Interment was in the New Castle Cemetery.

Shirley Willhite

 

Shirley Spurr Willhite, 70, of Smithfield, died Monday, June 15, 2009, at her residence.  She was the daughter of the late Sterling and Frances Sutton Spurr, a member of the Smithfield Baptist Church and retired from the Department of Corrections for the Sate of Kentucky.

 

She is survived by her husband: Russell lee Willhite, Smithfield: one son: Chic Willhite and wife, Lisa, Eminence; two daughters: Kathy Powell and husband, Earl, Sulphur and Brenda Wright and husband, Bobby, Lexington; one sister: Bonnie Ayers, Eminence; nine grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by one daughter, Denise Willhite, one granddaughter, two brothers and five sisters.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18th at Sholar Funeral Home, Pleasureville.  Rev. Michael Duncan, Pastor of the Eminence Baptist Church, officiated.  Interment was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

Charles N. Williams

 

Charles N. Williams, 74, oldest son of the late W. T. and Elizabeth Terrel Williams, died Saturday afternoon at 5:00 o’clock at the Central State Hospital.  He was a member of the Catholic Church.

 

Funeral services were conducted on Monday morning at the Eminence Catholic Church.  Burial was in the Eminence Cemetery.

 

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Emry Williams O’Connell, Eminence and a brother, Billie Williams, Louisville.

Dora Williams

 

Dora Kathleen Williams, 91, of Bedford, died Friday, December 4, 2009, at the Signature Health Care Center.  She was the daughter of the late Lego and Bertha Kitson Hayden.  She was a founding member of the Providence Baptist Church.

 

She is survived by one son: Donnie (Paula) Williams, Carrollton; one sister: Christine Stimble, Carrollton; one step-grandson and one step-great-grandson.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Williams.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 8th, at Ransdell Funeral Home in Bedford.  Rev. Carl Rucker officiated.  Interment was in the Port Royal Cemetery.

Thomas H. Williams, Sr.

 

Thomas H. Williams, Sr., 75, of LaGrange, died Monday, June 15, 2009.  He was a retired machinist with the Aerospace Industry in California and a licensed real estate agent.  He was also a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean War and the son of the late George and Rachel Williams.

 

He is survived by his wife: Ampy Williams, LaGrange; one son: Thomas Houston Williams, Jr. and wife Mary, Campbellsburg; one daughter: Peggy Ann Williams, Riverdale, UT; four sisters: Ruth Braddom, Dayton, OH, Ruby Linville, Kettering, OH, Jewell Huff, Pennington Gap, VA and Georgann Beardsley, Waxhaw, NC; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by a wife, Mary Lou Williams and one brother, Ralph Williams.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 18th at the Oldham County Funeral Home, LaGrange.  Interment was in the Campbellsburg Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. John Woirhaye

 

Mrs. John Woirhaye, 62, died at her home near New Castle Wednesday afternoon from the effects of influenza.  Mrs. Woirhaye is survived by her husband, John Woirhaye , and granddaughter, Celesta Duncan.  She was a member of the Primitive Baptist Church at Turners Station but was a regular attendant of the Baptist Church at New Castle.

 

The funeral services were conducted at the home on Friday, March 13th, by Rev. Weaver of Cleveland, OH.

Wheeler Woods

 

Wheeler “Buggs” Woods, 76, of New Castle, died Monday, January 4, 2010, at Homestead Nursing Center.  Hew the son of the late Richard “Dick” and Fannie Dixon Woods.

 

He is survived by his wife: Martha Shadburn, new Castle; three daughters and three step-children.

 

Funeral services were held at 12:00 p. m. Wednesday, January 6th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.  Interment was in the Sulphur Cemetery.

 

 

Minnie Smith Wooldridge

 

Funeral services for Minnie Smith Wooldridge, 56, were conducted at the Point Pleasant Church on Thursday with Rev. L. D. Fisher, of Somerset, officiating, assisted by her pastor, Rev. James Highfield.

 

The deceased underwent an operation at St. Joseph Hospital, Louisville, and lived but one week.  She was related to practically everyone in the Point Pleasant community and for more than 40 years was a member of the Point Pleasant Church.

 

Besides her husband, she is survived by her parents: Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Smith, one brother: Joe Smith and one son: Clay Wooldridge.

James Wright

 

James F. “Pete” Wright, 70, of Sulphur, died Monday, August 10, 2009.  He was a retired farmer, Baptist by faith, and the son of the late John Thomas and Fanny Willhoite Wright.

 

He is survived by his wife: Mary Streible Wright; four daughters: Teresa Boren and husband, Glen, Pamela Downey and husband, Ronnie, Peggy Noe and husband, Doug and Robin McKinney and husband, John; two brothers: Leves Wright and Bobby Wright; five sisters: Shirley Huff, Mary Jane Riley, Ruby Crawford, Kathy McIntosh and Dorothy Ashcraft and seven grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 14th at Heady Radcliffe Funeral Home, LaGrange.  Doug Acree and Sister Linda Morgan officiated.  Interment was in the Valley of Rest Cemetery, LaGrange.

Roy Yager

 

Roy Yager, 54, a former resident of Pleasureville, died in Shelbyville at 6:25 Sunday evening.  Death was attributed to a heart attack.

 

The body was brought to the residence of Mrs. Margaret Banta and Mrs. Pearl Thomas, in Pleasureville, where funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock with Rev. C. D. Bessinger officiating.  Burial was in the Pleasureville Cemetery.

 

The deceased is survived by one sister, Mrs. F. Z. Curry, of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Bobby Yeary

 

Bobby Ray Yeary, 72, of Pleasureville, died Monday, December 7, 2009, at Jewish Hospital in Louisville.  He was a native of Lee County, VA, the son of the late Benny and Sally Ayers Yeary, a member of the Eminence Baptist Church, ran Yeary’s Sawmill and was a U. S. Army Veteran.

 

He is survived by his wife: Margie Blackaby Yeary, Pleasureville; one son: Edward Allen Yeary, Frankfort; four daughters: Melinda (Tracy) Thomas, Bardstown, Loretta Quire, Smithfield, Serena Satterley, New Castle, and Susan (David) Marlette, Bethlehem; one brother: Shelby Yeary; and four sisters: Benny Sue

Nannie Yocum, 78, of Pendleton, died Sunday, March 87, 2009, at Baptist Hospital in Louisville.  She was the daughter of the late Sarah Jane Moore and a member of the Pendleton Methodist Church.

 

She is survived by her husband: James Yocum, Pendleton; one daughter: Julie Ernst, Eminence; one sister: Elizabeth Yocum, Pendleton; one brother: Bobby Moore, Paducah; five grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by one daughter: Christine Yocum, one son: David Lynn Yocum and two brothers: Ray and Chester Webb.

 

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 11th at Prewitt New Castle Funeral Home.  Sis. Linda Morgan, Pastor of Christ’s Open Door Fellowship, officiated.  Interment was in the Sulphur Cemetery.

Young, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Young, died Wednesday morning, September 4, 1912, at 10:15 o’clock, of tuberculosis.  He suffered from the disease for more than a year and spent some time in Florida in the hope that the climate would benefit him.  Mr. Young was 39 years old and had been a widower for 8 years.  He was a good man and had a great many friends.  He leaves an aged aunt who cared for him in his last hours of suffering; also two sisters and three brothers, and a host of friends to mourn his loss.  The funeral took place in the Grove Hill Cemetery on Thursday afternoon, September 5th and was conducted by Howard Lodge of Odd Fellows.
