Broaddus Tingle

Broaddus Tingle, 18 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ora Tingle of near Port Royal, died immediately after he was stabbed through the heart by Francis Carpenter another Port Royal youth, about 9:30 Wednesday night.

The boys who were practically the same age, had been school mates and were raised in the same neighborhood, are alleged to have been fussing during the day and to have had a fight earlier in the evening.  Carpenter alleges that tingle stole some liquor from him.

The boys were in front of the school house in Port Royal, where the senior class play was being put on and according to witnesses Carpenter is said to have left and purchased a knife, coming back to the school stabbing Tingle once in the heart, from which wound he died instantly.

Dr. A. P. Dowden, the coroner, was called and investigated the case.

Carpenter was arrested by Squire Dalton Jones and brought at once to New Castle where he was lodged in jail.

Funeral services for Tingle were held at the Port Royal Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m.  He was the only son Mr. and Mrs. Ora Tingle.

Carpenter lived with his father, Scott Carpenter, his mother having recently died.  Another brother, younger than he, did not live at home.

It was first thought that Carpenter had killed Tingle with a rock and Squire Jones was under that impression when he arrested him.  The investigation revealed a knife wound over the heart.

Examining trial for Carpenter has not been set, according to Judge M. J. Jones.
