Robert Annis

Mr. Robert Annis of the Franklinton precinct met an untimely death here (Lockport) Monday morning while at work on the river, the box loaded with heavy stone caught his head between it and the cribbing and mashed his skull.  He was carried to the drug store and when examined was found to be dead.  Mr. Annis was a most exemplary young man of fine moral habits and quite industrious.  He had just begun work, having only worked four hours.  His death was greatly lamented by all.  The corner’s inquest was held by the magistrate, W. L. Montgomery and following is a copy of the verdict after hearing the evidence.

“We the jury find, from the evidence given by Chester Shannon, James Newton, Sam Wooldridge, John Lee, Taylor Johnson, K. Smith, Chas, Webb, Lee Raisor and Sam Watson, in court of inquest over the body of Robert Annis, held this 20th day of October, 1902, to witness that said Annis came to his death while in the employment of one John Smoot, contractor from U. S. government in tearing out and rebuilding a cribbing at lower entrance to the lock, at Lock No. 2, on Kentucky River, in Henry County, Kentucky, at 10:30 a.m. October 20th, 1902.  We find that said Annis came to his death by carelessness on the part of his employer, or his agents in charge, and that one W. C. Ellis, was the boss or overseer over said Annis at the time of his death and we believe from the evidence given by the above witnesses that he is to blame for this lamentable accident in not getting said Annis from the hole, in which he was killed, before he gave the signal to engineer to hoist box from the hole, as the hole was not of sufficient size or depth to permit anyone  getting from it after the box had started.

Signed H. L. Shannon, foreman, H.T. Fallis, Fount James, W. T. Hoskins, Willis Shaw, and D. E. Cull, jury.”

Laura Bennington

After being confined to a bed of suffering and affliction for eight months, Miss Laura Bennington, on the morning of September 30, (1902) calmly passed away.  She was a devoted Christian.  One could not long be with her and not feel an uplifting of the soul, with a desire to strive to live a better life.  It was her lot to suffer much and long, yet she was habitually cheerful and always expressed herself as being fully reconciled to God’s will, whatever that might be.  The friends who went from time to time to minister to her physical wants, and who tried to comfort her spiritually, went away feeling that she was the comforter.  She loved to have her neighbors read the Bible, sing and pray with her, and many were the earnest exhortations she gave them.  Her family will miss her sadly, yet they feel that their loss is her eternal gain, and they have not a doubt that her spirit is safe with God.  Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, Rev. T. J. Godbey, at her father’s residence, after which the interment was made in the Eminence Cemetery.  The floral offerings were numerous and lovely.

 Della Black

Miss Della Black, died at the home of her cousin, Mrs. Fannie Smith, near Defoe, Saturday morning, October 25, (1902) of consumption.  As the summer passes away and the flowers die, so did this lovely young girl pass away; not as a flower to wither and die, but to live in a world beyond where there is no dying.  One in speaking of her who had known her from childhood said, “It would be hard to paint a picture of the life of one so lovely as Della Black”.  Her friends were without number, as could be quickly told from the crowd of young people passing in and out to see her.  We express deep sympathy to the bereaved ones, but we would say to them to strive the harder for the world beyond, where there is no parting.  She was a member of the Berea Church.  On Sunday afternoon her funeral was conducted by Rev. Wagoner, her pastor, after which she was laid to rest in the cemetery at Pleasureville, amidst sunshine and flowers, to await the resurrection morn.  A large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends followed her to the grave.

Sue Caplinger

We regret to chronicle the death of a lovely and amiable woman – Mrs. Sue Caplinger, wife of Samuel D. Caplinger – who departed this life in the “stillness of the Sabbath night”, after months of suffering from a complication of troubles, all of which she bore without a murmur.  She was certainly one of earth’s beautiful characters, and those who knew her best, loved her most.  Her Christian life shone thro’ every act, and truly can it be said of her, - “She hath done what she could,” and henceforth there is laid up for her, a beautiful starry crown, in that bright beyond, where pangs of disease are never known.  She was a faithful member of the Christian Church here, and until sickness overtook her, she was rarely absent from any church service.  She leaves a husband, a son, George, and daughter, Mrs. Dillard Ricketts, together with legions of friends to mourn her loss, but, dear sorrowing ones, look beyond these earth-clouds to the battlements of the heavenly land, where your loved one, now awaits to welcome you.

Mr. David Claxon, Jr., of near Bethlehem, died last week of Typhoid fever, and was interred in the family burying ground.

Death is always sad, especially when it comes in the morning of youth – in the bloom of manhood.  Dave was young man of energy and industry, and was quite a favorite in the community, consequently his death was greatly deplored.  He was charitable, kind and polite; and, if he had faults (who has not?) we will not speak of them now that he is gone.

Davis Cooper

Davis (L.) Cooper (October 27, 1874 – October 20, 1901) (son of A. R. and Annie Cooper)is dead, and a bright, handsome, stalwart young man he was.  He died at the home of his mother, Mrs. Annie Cooper, just west of town, last Sunday evening about 9 o’clock, after an illness of typhoid fever.  The best medical skill availed nothing; death had marked him for a victim.  Young Cooper was the only child of a widowed mother, his father, Arch Cooper, having passed over the dark river several years ago.  The management of the farm and the conduct of all business devolved thus early on the son, but he proved equal to the responsibility, and did his duty well.  For several years he had been conspicuous in the athletics of Henry County, being especially good at baseball and football; and, being a hale fellow well met, he was popular with his fellows, and, indeed, with people of every age.  He was full of vigorous life, and inspired by a cheerful spirit.  The passing of such a one, at so early an age as 26 years, affects every heart in the community to an unusual degree.  All sorrow and sympathize with the lone mother.

The funeral was one of the largest that one ever sees, a very long procession of vehicles following to Eminence where the remains were interred.  The religious service was short, and was held at the grave.
