John Deetan

A shooting affray here Saturday evening resulted in the death of John Deetan, a farmer, residing near Eminence, and the wounding of Deputy Marshall Dode Hoskins, who is in serious condition, and is not expected to live.

Deetan, after attacking his wife, left home Saturday morning declaring that he intended to kill Hoskins.  He entered Eminence carrying a cocked shotgun and he was arrested and placed in jail.

He proceeded through the town creating disorder, after being released, and was accosted by Town Marshall Will Kerns and Deputy Hoskins, in front of Ewins blacksmith shop, where they attempted to arrest him.  Deetan, who is a large, powerful fellow, replied, Is that you Dode? referring to Hoskins, and at the same time raising his shotgun, discharged it into Hoskins face. Hoskins fell mortally wounded.

He then attempted to shoot Kerns, who in self-defense, shot him through the heart, killing him instantly.  Deatan has resided near Eminence for about two years and is survived by two sons and a daughter.   Hoskins has a wife and several children.

Laidley E. Douthitt

This community was thoroughly saddened this morning over the announcement of the death of Laidley E. Douthitt, which occurred at 7:30 a.m..  On account of his extended and distressing illness the event was not unexpected, still its announcement cast a pall over, and caused genuine sorrow in the whole community.

Laidley was 30 years old (March 2, 1897 August 18, 1927), had passed through the schools of this county and was a student at Centre College, Danville, KY, at the breaking out of the World War.  Upon the entry of this country into that war, he promptly enlisted in the regular army, and after a time transferred to the aviation branch of the service, and was stationed at several of the training camps over the country while being trained for that service.  When his training had been completed he was transferred to the embarking station near New York, where with baggage and equipment packed, he was daily awaiting transportation to the scene of activities in France, when the armistice was signed.

He returned to New Castle and entered the law firm of Moody and Douthitt.  He began at once the active duties of his profession and though seriously handicapped with increasing illness he struggled on in his profession.  By January 1, 1927, disease had made such inroads upon his strength, and threatened such dire results to his health, that he was compelled to desist from further endeavor of any kind.

While living in Washington he was married to Miss Meda Tillman, of Jackson, TN, who with a little son, two years of age survives him.  He is also survived by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Douthitt, now of Lexington; and his sister: Mrs. O. C. Shannon of this place.

Laidley had been a member of the Christian Church, at this place since early childhood.  The funeral services took place at that church, Saturday morning at 10:30 and were conducted by Dr. Delcamp, the pastor.  The interment was in the New Castle Cemetery.
