Cleopatra Baker

Tuesday morning before school opened the little10 year old foster-child of Mr. Wilton Wills, Cleopatra Baker, met with a terrible accident, which resulted in her death.  While playing with some children near the railroad in front of the school house she got too close to a fire which the children had started, her dress caught and in a moment was ablaze.  Terrified, she ran to the nearest house about one hundred yards away, where helping hands tore her burning clothes off.  She received fearful burns all over her body, from the effects of which she died the following night.  She was a lovely child and great is the sorrow for her sad fate.  Mr. and Mrs. Wills have universal sympathy.

Rebecca Jenkins

News was received here by telegram Monday of the death of Mrs. Rebecca Jenkins (1838-1903), wife of Captain Barton W. Jenkins (1832-1910), at Umatilla, FL, on Sunday afternoon.  Mrs. Jenkins left here late in the fall with her husband, to spend the winter in the South, and while she had been very feeble, late advices from her were rather encouraging.  Hence the sad news was a painful surprise to her many friends.  She was for most of her life a devoted communicant of the Methodist Church, holding her membership at Broadway in Louisville.  The remains were brought to Eminence Wednesday for interment, this being her home county for many years, tho’ she was a native of Oldham, a daughter of William Barnhill.  Her husband and two sons, William B., Louisville, and Thomas F. of New Castle, survive, and deep is their grief shared by many sympathizing friends.

The funeral was preached Thursday by Rev. Dr. Ed O. Guerrant, a fast friend of Captain and Mrs. Jenkins – the former’s Adjutant-General during the war.

Harrison Morris, Sr.

Harrison Morris, Sr., 74, (December 4, 1794 – January 20, 1867) died of paralysis at the residence of W. B. Morris near Hillsboro, Henry County.  Uncle Harry, as he was familiarly called, by all his friends, was born in Woodford County, KY; in which county he lived until he was married to Miss Millie Forbitt.  He soon after his marriage, moved to, and settled in Henry County, some five miles west of New Castle, where he continued to live until a year or so ago.  He then left the old homestead, and made his principal home at his son Briant’s; although he visited among his children considerable during the last year or two of his earthly pilgrimage, at which place he breathed his last on the night of January 20th.

Bro. Morris filled the office of deacon for several years in the Hillsboro Church.  He and his wife joined the church about the close of the memorable revival of Bro. John Willson, in New Castle, in the year 1835.  They, however, did not make known their feelings  until the following  church meeting  at Hillsboro, when they were received and baptized  by that good and venerable man of God, Elder J. A. McGuire, who for many years served the Church as pastor from its organization  up to 1851 or 52; when he emigrated to the state of Louisiana.

He was buried in the Morris Family Cemetery #1.

John Morris, Sr.

John Morris, Sr., (May 6, 1812 – April 7, 1891) was born in Woodford County, KY; died in Henry County at 2 a.m.  When quite young this brother left Woodford County and came to Henry County, settling some miles west of New Castle.  In the year 1834, under the earnest and pungent preaching of old Father McGuire, Bro. Morris was brought by the Spirit of grace to realize his helpless condition and was enabled to trust in Christ alone for salvation.  Soon afterwards he related his Christian experience to the church at Hillsboro, Henry County, then but recently organized by Bro. McGuire, and was baptized with others into the fellowship of same.  In June 183_, Bro. Morris was united by marriage to Miss Martha Gillman, a most estimable companion and faithful Christian helpmeet in the long years ensuing up to the time of his decease.

Of ten children, seven daughters and three boys, one of whom died early in life, nine live to revere the memory of their devoted father.  On March 27, 1890, the cyclone, so memorable all over the country, unroofed our church house (Hillsboro) and otherwise injuring it as to make it necessary to tear down the walls and build it over.  “Uncle John” as he was familiarly called in the neighborhood, took great interest in the work, hoping to live a number of years to worship God with his brethren in the new house, but sad to say he never reached the place until his body was carried there by the undertaker.

His funeral was preached by Bro. W. W. Foree at the church of his devotion to a large and sympathetic congregation of relatives, neighbors and friends.  After which his body was laid to rest in the Odd Fellow’s (Sulphur) Cemetery, near Sulphur to await the resurrection morn.
