Hillis Griffin

Hillis Griffin, 22, a Smithfield youth, drowned in the Kentucky River at Lockport Sunday afternoon when he plunged into the water at Dam No. 2.  Griffin was swimming in mid-stream when it was seen he was hardly able to keep his head above the water.  It is supposed he became cramped.

He had gone to Lockport with a party of Smithfield boys who had souight relief from the weather by going to the beach at that point on the river.  Griffin started walking on the dam and the current ripped him up.

The body was recovered at 8:30 p.m. Sunday when a fisherman dragging the bottom with a large hook located it fifty yards from the dam in the center of the river.  Coroner D. L. Ricketts, Eminence, was called and pronounced death due to accidental drowning.

David Garrett Tyler plunged to the drowning mans rescue, but was unable to save his companion and narrowly escaped after he and Griffin had gone down under the water twice.  Hundreds of people on the beach 200 yards below saw the tragedy, but were unable to get to the scene in time to act.

Griffin, an orphan boy, had been reared since he was 2 by his grandmother, Mrs. Lucretia Griffin, Smithfield.  He is survived by a brother: Oliver Griffin, Sparta.  He had been in the employ of the Smithfield Milling Company as an extra working as he was needed and is said to have been a good worker in this capacity.  He had been, of late, in the employ of S. B. Wills.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the residence in Smithfield with Rev. T. W. Watts, Pastor of the New Castle Methodist Church, officiating.  Burial was in Cropper.

Wade Griffin

A coroners inquest, held Saturday in the courthouse in New Castle, in an effort to learn something about the death of Wade Griffin, New Castle, Negro, who was in his cabin when it burned Monday night a week ago.

County Attorney James Thomas summoned practically every Negro in New Castle in an effort to learn something about the affair.  There had been a great deal of talk going the rounds on the streets relative to Griffin being killed and then the house burned to hide the crime.

Coroner D. L. Ricketts had made a thorough investigation of the bnody and the evidence to be had.  He had received assistance from New Castle physicians in examining the body, but it was too badly burned to determine anything definite.

So Griffin is dead, and thats all any of us know now.
