Mabel Harlan

One of the saddest deaths that has occurred in our midst in years was that of Mabel Harlan, the fourteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Harlan.  She passed into the “better land” on Saturday, February 1, and the remains were buried next day in the New Castle Cemetery. During the summer she had typhoid fever, and a short while ago she had scarlet fever.  Naturally these left her in an enfeebled condition, so that the after effects in connection with something like la grippe were more than her vital powers could stand.  She was a very bright child, with an affectionate disposition, and it is greatly to be regretted that one so lovely should have a life so brief.  It is well with the child beyond peradventure: and no doubt what seems to the family an irreparable loss will prove to be a blessing.  The hallowed memories of her stay in the household will be an inspiration to higher aims in life and eternity.

Etta Hawkins

Mrs. Etta Hawkins, wife of James Hawkins, passed peacefully away at 2 o’clock p.m., December 23, 1902.  She joined the church at Hillsboro in 1899, and has since been a consistent member.  Her home was ever open to her many friends.  There is one face less at church and in their happy home, but there is one more tie in Heaven.  On Christmas Day the remains were brought from her home in Shelby County to Hillsboro, where the funeral services were conducted by Rev. Mason Eaton.

In our human weakness we weep that one so lovely should have to pass from our sight; yet there is no real cause for it, since it was merely the body that we placed in the earth, and not the conscious everlasting principle within that knew us, sympathized with us and loved us; that element of her being is in the celestial home “over there” with loved ones gone before.

George M. Hawkins

Mr. and Mrs. Jordan Hawkins of Eminence, have received the following from the Chaplain’s Headquarters: We tried to relieve part of your anxiety during our days of combat concerning your loved one in the service. Tactical conditions did not always warrant an immediate reply to your letter and I hope that soon you may find complete comfort from your loss.  The 30th of May was a memorial day of real significance to us all and the enclosed photo and copy of the address by Col. Wilson will help you share this service with us.  Your loved one, George M., was honored at this service by all the men of his troop in presenting arms when the honor roll was read.  We shall never forget the sacrifice he made that you and we might live in peace.  This is merely a gesture of great honor that we owe this dear boy.  May their dying not be in vain.  George was a splendid soldier.

George lies buried in our U. S. Military (Cemetery) at St. Corneille, France, Plot A, Row 12, Grave 284.  May God comfort and bless you always in His service.
