J. W. Lowden (Louden)

March 4th has long been a memorable day for it is there many of our chosen officials take their place in office.

To those who have known and loved J. W. Lowden more generally known here as Uncle Jimmie since his father’s day it will be even more so as it was then he breathed his last on earth in answer to the Master’s call to fill an appointed place at his maker’s command.

He was born May 20, 1853, so had lived about seven years over the three score and ten years, the allotted space of life.  He was raised an orphan and had pointed out to his children and in-laws his childhood home at Frankfort, where according to our information he said he had stood guard at twelve years of age  being as large as the regular sixteen year old.  The nearest relatives of which the children have any knowledge are in Texas.

He was married to Fannie A. Tingle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Tingle, deceased.  To this union, four children were born, Susie Lowden Wainscott, who has lived her married life and joining her father, G. B. Lowden of near Franklinton, Elmer Lowden of near Lacie and Mark, who preceded his father to the great beyond six years ago.  About 1883 he (J. W.) united with the Drennon Chapel congregation proving one of its most useful members living a life of Christian charitableness worthy in every way of praise.

Mrs. Fannie Lowden passed to her eternal home November 15, 1885.  In 1888 Mr. Lowden was married to Clarissa Tingle Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Tingle  and a relative of Squire Jones.  Her three sons were Will, Louis and John L. Jones.  He readily proved a genuine father while she lovingly mothered his four children, a companionship in all really commendable.  They moved to Missouri for two years then to their native county and for about twenty-eight years have been keepers of the County Home for the poor and disabled in all efficient way.

Mrs. Clarissa Lowden passed away in 1911 after a long and distressing illness.  John L. and wife (nee Pearl Hardin) who had lived with them two years or more continued on ill in the bereaved home till in February, 1913, when Mr. Lowden was married to Delia Mahorney Heilman relict of George Heilman and daughter of Richard Mahorney.  His third matrimonial venture again a success as he again had a good wife, a real helpmate,

who with his four children, seven grandchildren mourn the loss of a kind loved one.  Thus has passed from us one of Henry County’s most worthy citizens.

The funeral was held at the Port Royal Methodist Church with burial in the Odd Fellows Cemetery (Port Royal).
