E. R. Wallace

Mr. Wallace was on his way to Chattanooga, TN, when in an automobile accident, he died.  Just how the accident occurred is not clear.  He was on his way to attend the graduation of his daughter.  Mr. Wallace was native of Henry County, having been born near Lockport, October 11, 1851.  His father was Ebenezer Wallace and his mother, Mary Smoot.  When about thirty years of age, he married Miss Elizabeth Kelly, daughter of Squire Kelly.  To this union were born five children: E. R., Jr., Otis and Mrs. Herman Kemper of Henry County, Mrs. Ruth Clements, Gillette, WY and Mrs. Robert O’Brien, Chattanooga, TN.  There were seventeen grandchildren.

His funeral exercises drew a vast crowd of people from all parts, especially from his part of Henry and Owen Counties.  The discourse was preached by Theodore Kroeger, a minister of The Adventist Church of Louisville. The remains were conveyed to the private burying ground and laid to rest to await the fulfillment of the scripture.

Mr. Wallace was of that rugged type of man that has been universally acclaimed and is typified in Abraham Lincoln.  His forbearers were strong men of Scottish extraction.  His grandfather, Joshua Wallace, came from Scotland and served in the Revolutionary War.  On his father’s side he was related to General Lew Wallace and on his mother’s side to Senator Reed Smoot.

His death is a distinct loss to henry County and a calamity to his immediate family.

Charles Waller

After a long illness, patiently borne, Mr. Charles Waller, aged 32, passed away last Sunday afternoon about half past three o’clock.  For months past that insidious disease, consumption, had held him in its grasp and while for a time, hope abode in the hearts of his loved ones, it was soon seen that his days were numbered.  Loving sisters, a devoted wife and kind friends ministered to his wants and soothed his dying hours.  Nor was he without the consolation of the ministers of the gospel, to one of whom he expressed a hope that his failings and weaknesses had been forgiven.  At nine o’clock Tuesday morning,  services were held at the home on Church Street, conducted by Rev. T. J. Godbey, after which the remains, laden with beautiful flowers, were taken to Pleasureville for interment.  He leaves a wife and four young children, besides many relatives to mourn his untimely end.
