Legless man Hangs self, Alonzo Stivers Uses Laces from Limbs in
Eminence City Jail
Alonzo Stivers, who lost both feet when attempting to hop on a moving L & N
Train last year was found Saturday night in the Eminence City Jail, hanging from
the cell doorway by the laces from his artificial fee. He had been arrested
early Saturday night by his brother, night patrolman Pierce Stivers on a charge
of drunkenness. Despite having no feet, he had been able to work at painting
carpentry and the like consistently and had been in good spirits according to
family and friends. Funeral was conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Eminence
Christian Church by the Rev. Marvin. He was a member of he New Castle Christian
Church. Burial was at the Eminence Cemetery. He was survived by his wife: Nora
Catherine Stivers, aged 16 and by his children: Synthia Ann, Alvin Thomas &
Willena. And by 5 brothers and 5 sisters and his mother.
