White, Daniel

DeMoss, Beulah

DeMoss, Samuel

Very curious who this Samuel is. The only one I have around that time

frame is Samuel D. DeMoss, born 1814 (not 1816) and he married Jan 1850 to

Zerelda Slaton.... So my Samuel should have a wife, where as this one does

not.

Oh but wait, I just had a thought. Zerelda was born in 1829.... just like

that other DeMoss person is.. I bet.... should be Zerelda, wife of

Samuel, has to be that. But now to figure out why they are in a house of

Daniel White. Don't even know who that fellow is that they would live with

him.

On Sept 1, 1858, Samuel bought 70 3/4 acres on the waters of Otter Creek

for $1060.25. On Dec. 24, 1867, he purchased another 18 acres "adjacent to

Louis Ashby's" for $300.

The 1870 census indicates that Samuel and Zerelda owned real estate valued

at $1620 and personal property valued at $1000. All nine of their living

children were in the household in 1870. The 1900 Hopkins County Census

shows Zerelda as a widow. She had seven living children at that time.

Residing in her household were her grandson Virgil DeMoss, granddaughter

Lydia (DeMoss) Jeffries and Lydia's husband Charley.

Samuel & Zerelda were members of the Methodist Church. They and six of

their children are buried in Providence Methodist Church Cemetery, East

Lawn section, Hanson, KY.

Zerelda's obituary reads as follows; " One of the oldest women in the

county died Friday when Mrs. Zerelda DeMoss, age 92, died in the Vandetta

country after a lingering illness of a complication of diseases. The

deceased had been a member of the Methodist Church for 75 years. She is

survived by five children, these being T. M., D. W. , and J. S. DeMoss,

all of Vandetta, Mrs. B Gallaway of Corydon and Mrs. S. T. Barnettt of

Hartford, KY.

Twenty great grandchildren and forty grandchildren survive. Mrs. DeMoss was

an aunt of B. M. Slaton of this city.

The funeral services were held at the Providence Church at noon Saturday.

Rev. Payne of Sacramento officiating . Interment was in the Providence

Church Cemetery."

A Black memorial card reads; In loving Remembrance of Zerelda Slaton

DeMoss, Born Oct. 26, 1829, Died Jan. 7, 1921, age 91 years, 2 months, 12 days.

(Six children actually were surviving Zerelda, the obit didn't mention

Massilon.)
