In the spring of 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database Project, which evolved into the KyGenWeb Project. The idea was to provide a single entry point for genealogy data and research for all counties in Kentucky. In addition, the information for each county would be indexed and cross-linked to make it easier for researchers to find a name or data that they sought. In June 1996, as the KyGenWeb Project was nearing 100% county coverage, interested volunteers decided to create a similar set of pages for all states, establishing The USGenWeb Project. Volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the efforts for each state, and additional volunteers were and are being sought to create and maintain websites for every county in the United States. Welcome to the Jackson County site within the KYGenWeb Project ! Jackson County was established April 25, 1858 from portions of Rockcastle, Owsley, Madison, Clay, Estill, Laurel Counties. The county seat of McKee (probably named for Judge George R. McKee) is located in the center of the county in a little valley about a quarter of a mile wide, enclosed by steep hills, on the headwaters of Indian Creek.
If you're interested in submitting information to this site for other researchers, please make sure that you do not include information on living people. When submitting information, please do not submit anything you have not generated yourself or violates copyright law. I am also looking for the following Jackson County information to add to the updated site: Family stories, biographies and pictures. Coal mining stories and pictures, school and church stories and pictures. Keep in mind that you receive full credit for anything that you contribute to the site. I am not the "owner" of anything on the site, and you reserve the right to have it removed upon request. Currently, I am looking for people who might be interested in transcribing the following records: Birth, death, marriage, church and census to be included here. You will need to have access to census records somehow. These aren't provided for you. If you can help, contact me . My email address is at the bottom of this page. In an effort to preserve genealogical data contributed to KyGenWeb sites, a Repository Project has been initiated to serve as a storage place for county sites to help insure that data will not be lost due to server failure or human malfunction. County sites are not required to participate in this project. However, I believe that it will be a great benefit and have decided to allow the Jackson County site to be uploaded into the project.
Wanted : Family Trees - complete or incomplete. Sharing what you have on your family could help another researcher. In turn, you could find a missing relative or knock down that brick wall. Military History - Did you have an ancestor that served in the military ? If you have any stories, letters or pictures that you would care to share, I am starting a military section for the site and would appreciate anything you have to offer.
