Benjamin Bridges

In Jefferson County, Kentucky on 27 May 1834 personally appeared in open court before John Hewett, Judge of the Jefferson County Circuit Court.  Benjamin Bridges, age 75 years, who being only sworn according to law, made the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of Congress.

The declarant stated that he was living in James City in the Virginia state when he entered the service of the United States and served in the line as stated.  That in the month of January 1788, he volunteered under Captain John Dames for a tour of three months and was put aboard of a conquered ship which was lying in a public dock yard in the James River.  He states that said ship was ladened with store supplies and that under the command of Captain Dames they proceeded in that ship up the James River and landed at a place and supplied several forces according to their needs.  In this kind of service he was actively and usefully employed as a seaman until his three months expired when he was honorably discharged.  In the month of May 1778 he volunteered for a tour of twelve months for the purpose of guarding and protecting Williamsburg, then the seat of government of Virginia.  He was marched from James City and stationed as a guard in said town of Williamsburg and was under the command of Charles David Mason, who was commander-in-chief of the garrison.  While he was there stationed, he received the appointment of issuing commands from the company general and in that capacity, he states that he acted for 12 months giving satisfaction both to the commissioner general and his soldiers.  In the month of May at which time his twelve months being expired, he resigned his office and returned home.

The declarant further stated that in the year 1781, General Arnold invaded Virginia and that in the month of January 1781, the militia was called out for the purpose of spelling the two as one.  When the said Benjamin Bridges was again called into service, he was marched from said county of James City under the command of Captain Andrew Barkes and remained in the ranks as a private for fifteen days.  After marching to the river, he states, they had to retreat up until they met General Lafayette's army at Richmond, and was with his army during their retreat up into the county he states that he received the appointments of wagonmaster.  They retreated and advanced until the 22nd of Jun 1781.  This declarant states that, independent of service specified in above declaration of which he has a perfect and distinct recollection, that he did perform other services, called out for short periods to answer certain emergencies which will appear in an amendments to the foregoing declaration.  He states that he has no documentary evidence of his service, but independents of respectably traditional evidence which now appears to the court.   He hereby relinquishes every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any state.  This declaration was made on the date aforesaid.

He further states that he was born in James City County of Virginia in the year 1739 (might be 1759) and has a record of my age as taken on father's family register.  When he entered the service of the United States, he was residing in James City County, Virginia, where he remained until the year 1795.  He then moved to Kentucky in Jefferson County.  When I entered the service Captain John Domes was commander, and was later under the command of General Mason and Charles Nelson during Arnold's invasion.

Afterwards, I served General Lafayette and General Wayne of the Brigade.  I never received a written discharge but was always honorably discharged.  I never received a compensation, but had several appointments as stated in this declaration and I will make Peter Charles Carey, clergyman, and James Reichett, who can testify to my character for veracity and reputation as a soldier.

We, Peter Carey, clergyman, and James Reichett, residents of the city of Louisville, say we are acquainted with Benjamin Bridges who has sworn to the above statement. He is reputed and believed in his neighborhood to have been a Revolutionary soldier.

On the 26th day of August A. D. 1853, Harrison Bridges appeared in Jefferson County court, and made oath to the following:   Know all men by these present, that I, Harrison Bridges, do hereby constitute and appoint Caleb White and D. D. Addison, my true and loyal agents and attorney, to prosecute my claim for any amount of Revolutionary War pension or increase of pension, that may be found due me on account of and for the service of my deceased father, Benjamin Bridges, in the Revolutionary War.   And I hereby authorize my said agent to examine all the papers and documents in relation to said claim on file in the claim on file in the Department of the Treasury at Washington.   And my said attorneys to have full power to appoint one or more substitutes under them for the purpose herein expressed, and to do all things that might or could do were I personally present.
