William Griffin
 

SECTION 23,  W 24313,  VIRGINIA

William Griffin, the above named soldier, made application for a pension in Jefferson County, Kentucky on 12 Oct 1820, and made declaration that he enlisted for 18 months as a private soldier in Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Thomas Hoard in the regiment commanded by Colonel Abraham Buford in the line of the state of Virginia on the Continental Establishment. 

He further stated that he served till October 1780 when he was discharged in Virginia.  He was in the Battle called Buford's Defeat and received 2 wounds in the action.  He named for evidence of the truthfulness of his statements, Captain Thomas Pearson and John Humphries.  He also made schedule of his property and stated that he is by occupation a farmer, and has four children: two girls who are Nancy, aged 19 years, and Ludia, aged 17 years.  He also has two boys who are Morgan, aged 13 years, and Anderson, aged 9 years.

George A. Canter of Clarke County, Indiana, made declaration on 22 Sep 1846, that he is 46 years of age and has been acquainted with Nancy Griffin of this county for thirty years past, that she is the widow of William Griffin who was a Revolutionary War soldier and was also a pensioner of the United States from Virginia and died about 1832 in this county.  He also stated that for fifteen years before his death, he lived in Jefferson County, Kentucky.  They had a number of children of which the four youngest were Nancy, Lydia, Morgan and Anderson.

In the same place, on the same date, before Joel M. Smith, Justice of the Peace, Jacob L. Stillwell made affidavit of acquaintance for fourteen years with the applicant and made statement of the truthfulness of the statements of the applicant.  

In Clarke County, Indiana on 22 Sep 1946, Alexander Mars, Esq., resident of said county, aged 57 years, made declaration of being well acquainted with the applicant.

In Putnam County, Indiana on 23 Jul 1846, Anderson B. Matthews, resident of said county, aged 70 years, made declaration of being well acquainted with William Griffin and his wife, Nancy, sometime called Ann, before the year 1794, in Rowan County, North Carolina.   J. Etcherson also made affidavit of having been well acquainted with William Griffin and Nancy Morgan, sometime called Ann Morgan before their marriage, in Fauquier County, Virginia.   He also knew their children, William, Polly, Sally, John, Elizabeth and some others.   This affidavit was made before Anderson B. Matthews, Justice of the Peace, and William S. Townsend, Clerk of that county.

Morgan Griffin, aged 42, son of the said William and Nancy Griffin made declaration for a pension in Clarke County, Indiana that he is 42 years of age.  He also stated that Nancy Griffin died in Clarke County, Indiana on 02 Sep 1849.  This affidavit was made before John W. Barlow, Justice of the Peace, and Darious Phillips, Clerk.

The widow, Nancy Griffin, applied for a pension in Clarke County, Indiana on 15 Aug 1844, and made declarations as above, and also stated said William Griffin was wounded in the shoulders and left hip in said service, and that he died on 06 Aug 1832 in Indiana.  They were married on 26 Jan 1787.

In Clarke County, Indiana on 18 Aug 1844, before Justice of the Peace, Eli Wadkins made declaration that he was well acquainted with the widow and had been acquainted with her for forty five years.   This declaration was made before John T. Dejornatt, Justice of the Peace.  

Morgan Griffin, son of William and Nancy Griffin, made declaration for a pension on 17 Aug 1844 in Clarke County, Indiana before Lemuel Ford, Justice of the Peace, and Eli McCalley, Clerk.

William Griffin, of Jefferson County, Kentucky, who was a private in the regiment commanded by Colonel Buford of the Virginia line for eighteen months was inscribed in the Pension Roll of Kentucky Agency to commence on 12 Oct 1820.  Certificate of the pension was issued on 01 Feb 1821.

Nancy Griffin, widow of William Griffin, was inscribed on the Pension Roll of Kentucky Agency to commence on 04 Mar 1848.  Certificate of pension was issued on 25 Sep 1850.
