Michael Leatherman applied for a pension in Jefferson County, Kentucky on 03 May 1830, and stated the he was 77 years of age, that he was born and raised in Maryland, that he enlisted in 1776 for one year and 8 months in the Army of the United States, in Maryland.  John Gerger (Gergis?), brother of Colonel Frederick Gerger was also raised in said state, and in a day or two after the enlistment of this deponent.  He also enlisted in said army at the same time, that he and John Gerger were enlisted by Captain Lewis Farmer, a recruiting officer who lived and came from Philadelphia, that said Michael Leatherman and John Gerger were marched from Indiana to Pennsylvania, and there were enlisted with the regiment commanded by Colonel Miles.  After said Michael Leatherman, and John Gerger had remained in Pennsylvania about one month, they were marched to the north and joined the army commanded by General Washington and were in the action and defeat of Long Island.  While in that action, said Miles was taken prisoner.  The said Farmer was wounded and the company except a few were killed and scattered.   Said Farmer was afterward promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and the remainder of his company left after the Battle of Long Island.  Soon afterward, Michael Leatherman was transferred into another company of Captain Rice, of the regiment of Colonel Stewart.  Michael Leatherman was in the Battle of Brandywine, and Germantown and was in the skirmish at the White Plains.  He served out the period of his enlistment and was duly and honorably discharged.  After the discharge he again entered as a volunteer in the Militia of the State of Pennsylvania, and was marched to Annapolis as a volunteer soldier in the Militia of the State of Maryland, and served about four or five weeks and on learning that Cornwallis was captured, was discharged.  He resided in Maryland in the neighborhood of said John Gergis and Frederick Gerger/Gergis till about the year of 1791, when he removed to Jefferson County, Kentucky and settled about twelve miles from Louisville, where he has resided ever since.  John Gerger, mentioned above is now dead, that about three years ago he came to Kentucky and purchased one hundred and sixty acres of land in Jefferson County and settled thereon, that he is the father of six children, among whom are four sons and two daughters, that two of the sons are now dead, that as the children came of age they married and left him, that his son Jacob, when still a minor and about the year of 1818, agreed to live with him and take care of his father for half of the land, till Jacob was of age and not go out for a trade, as his brothers had done.  Said Jacob lived with his father and mother for about three years after he attained full age, and assisted Michael Leatherman to cultivate the farm, and Jacob obtained one half of the one hundred and sixty acres of land, that his wife had been dead for about 6 years and he lives with his son-in-law.  Jacob Blankenbecker, who has a larger family, has been living with him for six years.  

In Jefferson County, Kentucky on 03 May 1830, Colonel Frederick Gerger made declaration of acquaintance with the applicant, since they were ten or twelve years of age, that said Gerger will be seventy-six years of age on June 8th next, that his brother John Gerger, who was mentioned in the application of Michael Leatherman, is now dead, that John Gerger enlisted in 1776 and served as stated.

In Jefferson County, Kentucky on 03 May 1830, Simeon N. Kalfus made declaration of acquaintance with the applicant, Michael and to his belief in his statements.

These affidavits were made before Warden Pope, Clerk of Jefferson County, Kentucky.

In May 1815, Michael Leatherman, and his wife, Margaret made declaration of having bequeathed a tract of land to Jacob, their son, and his heirs.

A letter written from Jefferson County, Kentucky on 07 Jul 1831, to the Commissioner of Pensions that Michael Leatherman departed this life this morning.

Michael Leatherman of Jefferson County, Kentucky who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Rice, in the regiment commanded by Colonel Stewart was inscribed on the Pension Roll of the Kentucky Agency to commence on 28 Jun 1830.   Certificate of Pension was issued on 29 Jun 1830.
