There is on file a certificate from Robert McMillan who was Lieutenant of the 5th Infantry and acting Ensign which stated that in February 1821 at a place near the mouth of the River St. Peter, on the upper Mississippi, Joseph Leightner was a private soldier of Camp 16, of the 5th Regiment of Infantry and was employed on extra duty which produced "hernea."  Since that time, he has been unfit for military duty.  This affidavit was made on August 12, 1821.

Joseph Leightner was a private in Captain George Gooding's Company of the 5th Regiment of the United States Infantry, was inscribed on the pension roll of the Kentucky agency to commence on August 12, 1821.  Certificate of pension was issued on September 5, 1822.
