S 312.40 VIRGINIA

The above named soldier, Robert Maloney, applied for a pension in Jefferson County, Kentucky on 07 Feb in the year 1833, and stated that he was 67 years of age at that time.  That he was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and that when he was about four years of age, his father removed to Frederick County, Virginia in January 1781.  He being at that time a school boy, volunteered to go under James Cochran in a troop of Horse and marched toward Charlottesville, Virginia for the purpose of opposing Tarlton who was said to be then approaching that place.  When they were within a few miles of said place, they were met by an express and advised that Tarlton had his course changed.  They then marched to Fredericksburg and Falmouth, Virginia where they were detained and mustered for three weeks by David Holmes when they were discharged and permitted to return home.  He was occupied in the service for not less than one month; in the fall of the year of 1781 he was drafted to march to York Town, Virginia under Samuel Gidkinson and marched within a few miles when they were met by an express and told the news of the surrender of Cornwallis and they returned to Winchester and he served three months more, guarding the prisoners after his discharge.   Also in 1782 he was drafted to guard prisoners surrendered by Yorktown, and was under the command of Captain Samuel Glass.  After having served about two months the prisoners were marched from that county to the mouth of Conococheague, thence to Hagerstown, and when they were received by the other troops and he returned to Winchester, he was discharged.   He was in this last service not less than three months.  He further stated that he has lived in Kentucky for more than forty years and that for the last thirty five or thirty six years, he has lived in Jefferson County, in the state of Kentucky or in the adjoining county of Bullitt.

He named as references in regard to his character, for truthfulness, reliability and acquaintance, Thomas Wilson, present Judge, and John Tinckey.
