William Mills

MARYLAND  R.7.251

The above named soldier applied for a pension in Jefferson County, Kentucky on October 29, 1833, and made declaration that he is a resident of Louisville.  He is eighty two years of age.  He enrolled in captain James Patterson's Company on the Snow Hill Battalion in Worcester County, Maryland of Select Militia on July 15, 1780.  He served for nine months in Colonel John Daniel's (?) Regiment as a soldier under Colonel John Done, Major Holland and Captain James Patterson.  He resided in the county of Worcester, Maryland at the time he enlisted in the service and marched through the counties of Somerset and Worchester, Maryland and Sussex County, Delaware.

Daniel C. Burks, Clergyman of the Presbyterian Church, in Louisville, Kentucky made certification of being well acquainted with William Mills for 18 years and to his belief in the statements of the applicant.

Jacob W. Kalfus, resident of Louisville, also made certification of being well acquainted with the applicant, William Mills, in Jefferson County, Kentucky on October 29, 1838.

There was a letter on file from G. G. Brewer of the Land Office of Annapolis, Maryland on May 30, 1838 stating that it appeared from the Military Rolls of the Revolutionary War, of that office, that William Mills was enrolled in Captain James Patterson's Company of the Snow Hill Battalion on July 15, 1780 in Worchester County.  Select Militia men were only occasionally called out and didn't perform continuous duty.  For that reason said Brewer could not furnish any evidence as to the length of the time he was in service.  The Rolls did not show it.  He thought the Select Militia men were not entitled to a pension under the pension laws of the United States, which required not less than six months continuous service to enable a soldier to obtain a pension.  G. G. Brewer also referred to J. L. Edwards, Esquire, and commissioner of pensions of Washington, D. C. to furnish the correct information.
