Served in Captain Wells Company in the United States Army.

On August 3 of the year 1838 in Clark County in the state of Illinois, the said pensioner appeared in open court and stated that he had served in the company under the command of Captain Samuel Wells and in the regiment under the command of Colonel William Oldham and he stated that he wanted his pension payable in the future in the above locality, the state of Illinois.  The said pensioner, Joseph Shaw, stated and swore that he had removed from the state of Kentucky to the state of Illinois in order to get cheaper land on which to settle. 

The affidavit of Stephen Archer as also given at the same time and in the same place as the foregoing.  The said deponent stated and swore that the said pensioner was the identical person that he claimed himself to be.

On November 21 of the year 1832 in Jefferson County in the state of Kentucky, the said pensioner, Joseph Shaw, gain appeared in open court and for the purpose of again asking or applying for a pension.

The affidavit of John Shaw was also given at the same time and and in the same place as the foregoing.  The said deponent stated and swore that at one time and in the said county and state he had been both well and favorably acquainted with the said pensioner, Joseph Shaw, and this said deponent also stated that he himself, the said deponent had assisted the said pensioner Joseph Shaw in setting the pension that was due him because of his services on the part of the United States of America.

The affidavit of Warden Pope was also given at the same time and in the same place as the foregoing.  The said deponent stated and swore that at one time and in the said county and state he had been both well and favorably acquainted with the said pensioner, Joseph Shaw, and this said deponent also stated that he himself, the said deponent, had assisted the said pensioner Joseph Shaw in getting the pension that was due him because of his services on the part of the United States of America.

There was also with this pension record the usual jacket stating that the person had received a certain amount and that his certificate had been issued a certain time but this was not filled out, with the exception of the name of the pensioner and it was said that he received only $320 at $10 per month.
