James Welsh, the above named soldier applied for a pension
in Jefferson County, Kentucky on September 1, 1832 and stated that he is
77 years of age. He was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania.
In 1776 he resided in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in that year when he
volunteered for 9 months in a company of volunteers commanded by Captain
William Horton, John Holladay and William Elliott, first and second
Lieutenants and Robert McDowell, Ensign. The deponent was Second
Sergeant and served as such till November 16 of that year when he was
captured at Fort Washington in New York, and kept in close confinement
till bout the first of March 1777 and was then taken with the other
prisoners and marched from said Fort under British guard, and delivered.
Captain ------- ? of the American Army and paroled in order to bear arms
till exchanged sometime in the month of May of that year. He ordered
as a Waggoner in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment commanded by Colonel Daniel
Broadhead and served in that capacity till sometime in the month of August
of the same year when he left the service. Sometime about the first
of May 1779 he volunteered in a company commanded by Captain William
Harrod in the company commanded by Colonel John Bowman against the Indians
in that campaign. His services under Captain Harrod was for about
two months. In July 1780 he volunteered as a Lieutenant in the
company of volunteers of which Hardy Mill was Captain and marched in an
expedition under Colonel George R. Clarke against the Indians at
Chillicothe and Piqua towns on the waters of the Big or Little Miami
River in said expedition. They had a severe battle and took the
------? and destroyed the Indian towns at the expedition he served as a
Lieutenant aforesaid for about two months. On his return from the
expedition, he and the said Captain Hill and John Olaton entered as spies
being engaged as such by Colonel Floyd Slaughter and served as such from
about the first of August 1780 till sometime in December of that year,
being about three months. In March 1781, he again entered as a spy
being employed or engaged by Colonel Todd and Patterson and served as such
till November 4, or about eight months. This affidavit was made
before Alexander H. Gailbreath, Justice of the Peace. Section 94 Robert h. Gailbreath, clergyman, resident of the aforesaid county and Levin Cooper, resident in the same county, made certifications of being well acquainted with the applicant, James Welsh, on December 27, 1832 and to their belief in the statements of the old soldier. James Welsh of Jefferson County, Kentucky who was a private in the company commanded by Captain Harbor of the regiment commanded by Colonel Broadhead, in the Pennsylvania Line for nine months, as private and 8 months, as Sergeant and two months as Lieutenant, was inscribed on the Pension Roll of the Kentucky Agency to commence on March 4, 1821. Certificate of the pension was issued on March 27, 1833 and sent to Henry Northup, Louisville, Kentucky. |
