Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Anderson Co. JAMES R. YORK was born in Jessamine County, February 9, 1820, and is of Irish descent. His ancestors settled in Virginia, but his grandfather subsequently came to Kentucky, settled in Fayette County, and had a number of children, among whom was Bartlet York, a soldier in the war of 1812. Bartlet York married Agnes Paxton, a daughter of James Paxton, a native of Virginia; they had twelve children: John B., James R., Elizabeth, Frances E., Ann Maria, Benjamin G., Mary Jane, Susan, Samuel, William, Armstead and John. James R., the second child, was reared and educated in Anderson County, and has always been engaged in farming. In his early life he worked for others until he succeeded in obtaining sufficient to purchase for himself. In 1887 he bought his present place of 175 acres, known as Valley Home, on Salt River. He married, March 21, 1848, Miss Margaret J. Johnson, daughter of William and Martha (Parrish) Johnson, and is, with his wife, a member of the Christian Church.
