The Times of Long Ago, Barren County, Kentucky. By Frankln Gorin. John P Morton & Company Incorporated, 1929. Published originally in the Glasgow Weekly Times, 1870's, pp. 139-140. IN MEMORY OF ANTHONY CAKE. Anthony Cake was born in Gloucester County, Va., October 12, 1801, his father was Scotch Irish by descent. His mother was French. Having been left an orphan at a tender age, he was taken by Mr. and Mrs. James Spratt (Mrs. Spratt was his aunt) to raise. He received but little education at school, and at home he was taught to fear and love God, to honor and respect his foster-parents, to be truthful, honest and moral. They emigrated to Monroe County, Ky., from Gloucester County, Va., soon after, in 1819 Anthony walked from Tompkinsville to Glasgow. He had but a few shillings in his pocket and went to work the day of his arrival and George W. Matthews seeing that he would work, made him an apprentice. George W. Matthews was the best of cabinet makers, having been taught by the Goodalls and John H. Anderson. Owing to the skill of Matthews and the aptness and industry of young Anthony, he in due time became a fine workman. In the meantime he had acquired by his frankness, honesty and truthfulness and good conduct the highest esteem and respect of our very best citizens in town and country. His associates were the good and moral, of whom he had a goodly number. He being poor, worked for some time as a journeyman. He married Adeline Mayfield, a daughter of John Mayfield Jr. in Glasgow, February, 1825. She was also poor, but a helpmate indeed. A hard road lay before them which they had to travel, but bravely they fought the battle of life - he in his shop with his saw and plane, she with her shears and needles. She manufactured many domestic articles which she exhibited at our Fairs. She was always successful in prize-taking, succeeding in gaining thirty-seven, value from silver cup down. Anthony carried on his business during his life sometimes in partnership with others, but mostly by himself. He was a faithful workman, never slighted a job, an honest, fair trader, making known defects if any. He was truthful and his representations could be relied on. He was temperate, industrious and possessed great fortitude and energy, was fond of his friends, and relished a good joke. He was firm in his principles. He never loitered about the streets, was no street yarn spinner, but was of quiet disposition, and preferred learning by listening rather than teaching or contending about things of which he was ignorant. He had two sons, Wm. Tandy and George. He took great pains to bring them up sober and industrious men, and by giving them the best education he was able to. He well knew the advantages of good solid education. The eldest son when grown, went to Texas, was clerk of the Legislature of Texas one session; was clerk of the County and Circuit Court of Star county, Texas; a volunteer in a company sent into Mexico against marauders, was wounded badly and with eleven others taken prisoner. He was condemned to death, and on the morning of the execution he and the others were informed by the officer to prepare for their execution. He good humoredly gave the officer a Masonic sign. The latter reproached him for not having given it before and immediately communicated what had happened to General La Vega, who immediately pardoned him and his companions. He was a lawyer and master of three languages - French, Spanish and English. He died at Jacksonville, Florida, in 1857, when on his way to Kentucky. George, who now lives in Glasgow, never married. He went to Louisville in 1849 and lived with Anderson, McLean & Co. Wholesale Merchants, for several years where he became a good clerk and salesman. He was for several years secretary of the Barren County Branch R. R. and has been and is yet secretary of the Fair Grounds Association of Barren County, and clerk in general of Glasgow. Anthony Cake died June 24th, 1850. His wife died January 12th, 1861. George, the only survivor, lives in a neat cottage in Glasgow, and is possessed of sufficient support.
