CHINOWTH was born September 20, 1841, in Barren County, within about two miles and one-half of his present home. He was a member, during the late war, of Company E, Ninth Kentucky Volunteer Infantry, with which he served from October 26, 1861, to April 12, 1863; first as orderly sergeant, and later as first lieutenant. June 1, 1863, he became a member of Company A, Thirty-seventh Mounted Infantry, with which he served as captain until December 29, 1864. He was in the battles of Shiloh, seige of Corinth, and followed Gen. Bragg in his noted raid through Kentucky, and was present at a large number of minor battles and skirmishes, during several of which he was opposed to the command of the famous Gen. Morgan. His father, Archibald S. Chinowth, was born December 5, 1812, in Washington County, Tenn.; when a young man he came to Kentucky and located in Barren County, where he died June 20, 1874. He was a son of Nicholas Chinowth, who was a native of Maryland and of Welsh descent. Archibald S. Chinowth married, in 1840, Melvina, daughter of Isaac N. and Elizabeth (Ritter) Denham. From this union sprang Isaac N., Mary A. (Payne), Joseph N., Melissa B. (Miller), John W., Margaret S. (Quigley), Telitha D. (McGee), and Archie N. (Hildreth). Isaac N. married, December 17, 1863, Nancy T., daughter of Hamilton and Lucy A. (Pace) Hutchens. To them have been born Victoria A., Lucy N., Effie L., Mary J., Fannie T., Robret P., Ethel and William Otis. Capt. Chinowth, by industry alone, has acquired a competency for himself and family, and is the owner of 188 acres of land, besides one of the best houses in his section. He has made farming his occupation, and has been for about eight years a magistrate and a member of the court of claims of Barren County; has also served as deputy sheriff of the county. He and his wife and three daughters are members of the Christian Church; in politics he is an independent Democrat. He was census enumerator of Sartain Precinct in 1880 and set apart to the ministry June 10, 1883.
