Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. JOHN W. FANT was born June 12, 1852, on Barren River, Barren Co., Ky., where he has since resided. His father, Gustavus H. Fant, a native of Allen County, was born in 1801, and died in July 1866, and was the son of Fielding Fant. Gustavus H. was twice married, first to Elizabeth, daughter of French and Matilda (Smith) Settles, of Barren County, and to their union were born America (Everett), Marinda H. (Lynn), California E. (Smith), John W. and Fielding J. His second marriage was with Mrs. Celia A. Kimball, who bore him one child - Virginia (Wooten). John W. was educated at the common schools of the vicinity in which he was reared, and at Cave City College. He first married Mary H. Moore, of Allen County, who died April 7, 1876, without issue, and September 12, 1878, he married Mary S., daughter of John L. and Lizzie (Martin) Cole, of Barren County. She was born April 22, 1860, and to them have been born John H., Fielding J., Lenwood A., William W. and James B. Mr. Fant is a farmer, having on the Barren Bluffs, near old Port Oliver, 152 acres of productive and well improved land highly cultivted. He also raises and deals in fine stock, and at present has horses of a superior quality. Mr. Fant in politics is a Democrat; his wife is a member of the Baptist Church.
