Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Barren County. SAMUEL B. HATCHER was born February 24, 1838, in Barren County. At the age of nine years he moved with his parents to Edmonson County, where he grew up. At the age of twenty-one years he left home, and lived for one year in Warren County, after which he lived for six years in Hart County; in 1873 removed to Barren County, and located on the farm where he now resides. His father, Branch Hatcher, was born September 20, 1809, in Buckingham County, Va. He was a farmer, and in connection with his farm for a number of years engaged in working at the stone-mason's trade. He also clerked for sometime in the store of James G. Haddy, who was afterward elected lieutenant-governor of Kentucky. Branch Hatcher's father, Barnett Hatcher, was also a native of Virginia, and of Scotch descent. Branch Hatcher was married in 1837 to Phelissa A., daughter of Samuel V. and Sally (Williams) Saunders, of Barren County. From this union sprang Samuel B., Jasph P., Daniel, Sarah (deceased), Robert and Martha (Chambers, deceased), Josie, Katherine (Staples), Azariah and Ermine P. Robert and Martha are twins. Samuel B. has been twice married; first, January 29, 1867, to Joanna A., daughter of Richard C. Mansfield. She was born December 3, 1843, and bore her husband two children: Herschel P. and Charles A. (deceased). She died December 23, 1871. Mr. Hatcher's second marriage took place April 1, 1873, to Mrs. Mary E. Dickerson, daughter of Robert and Edith (Peers) West. Her children are William (deceased), Charles (deceased), and Thomas J. Dickerson. Mr Hatcher is the owner of ninety-five acres of fine land, well improved and in a good state of cultivation. He is a member of the Rock Spring Baptist Church, as also his wife. He is an active farmer, and in politics is a stanch and unswerving Democrat.
