William Roger Riddle, Feb 1997, WRiddleNud@aol.com, Barren Co. ROGER MILTON RIDDLE was born 9 Jan 1908 in Glasgow, Barren County, KY to James Jackson and Lucy Ellen (Humphrey) Riddle, both born in Cumberland County, KY. James was the son of Fountain R. Riddle, born in Cumberland County in 1844; he married Rhoda C. Brake (born 11 Sep 1876 in Cumberland County, died 5 Nov 1942)in 1865 in Cumberland County, and they had ten children: Wilbon W. (1866 -?), Happy Nancy (1869 - Before 1900), James Jackson (3 Apr 1872 - 12 Dec 1937), Samuel R. (3 Apr 1875 - 11 Sep 1964), Jane Margaret (Sep 1877 - ?), Sarah C. (Aug 1884 -?), Ekins N. (Feb 1888 -?), Henry L. (Mar 1892 -?), Wolford, and Francis. James' wife, Lucy, was the daughter of Frank (born 1831) and Sallie Ann Humphrey, also of Cumberland County, parents of nine children: Eugene (1855 - ?), Jessee (1858 - ?), Bob (10 Jun 1864 - 16 Jan 1926), John (1865 - ?), Ben (1866 - ?), Alice, Wilbon (1872 - ?), Lucy Ellen (11 Sep 1876 - 5 Nov 1942), and Marcos (1879 - ?). James and Rhoda Riddle had ten children: Albert Edward (6 Apr 1898 - 5 Jul 1956), Lillie Pearl (15 Feb 1900 - 28 Jan 1985), James Earnest (8 Mar 1902 - Mar 1984), Myrtie Thelma (25 Feb 1904 - 6 Jul 1984), Dorothy Ruth (13 Mar 1906 - 8 Aug 1924), Roger Milton (subject) (9 Jan 1908 - 26 Mar 1976), Logan Porter (20 Feb 1910 - 12 Oct 1977), Wilma Nosby (male) (14 May 1912 - 31 Oct 1983), Paul Brent (18 Feb 1915 - 6 Feb 1990), and Mary Elizabeth (6 Jan 1919 - still living). Roger Milton Riddle attended Glasgow Public School through fifth grade. He was proud of his lack of education, believing himself to be a member of some lower class, whose members should not be educated. His ambition, not realized, was for all of his children to grow up to be unskilled manual laborers. From 1924 - 1942 he worked as a circus roustabout, traveling throughout the Continental U.S. erecting tents, cleaning up after animals, packing and unpacking circus trains. He never said much about his experiences in the circus, as he believed that the past should never be discussed for any reason, but still one humorous story came out of that period. He was in a dense crowd when he felt the hand of a pickpocket reaching into his pocket. He felt around, located the pickpocket, and put a hand into HIS pocket. He made a quarter on the deal. From 1942 - 1961 he worked as a bricklayer and plasterer in Glasgow, KY. He changed careers to avoid service in World War II. Bricklaying was classed as a strategic occupation during the tremendous wartime buildup. He wanted to avoid military service because he believed that the U.S. was on the wrong side. He was an incorrigible bigot. Roger married 25 Jun 1924, place unknown to May Rice (born 27 May 1914, died Sep 1990). They had two children: 1.
