Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, ed. 8-B Bracken County JOHN S. ORR was born in Bracken County, Ky., and received his education at Augusta College. He read law with Cleveland & Doniphan in 1870, graduating from the Louisville Law School in 1871. He began the practice of the legal profession at Covington, Ky., but subsequently removed to Augusta, on account of poor health, where he took charge of the Chronicle. In 1872 he married Mary E. Knoedler, of Newark, N.J. Mr. Orr is prominent in his community as a politician, and at this writing, (1887) is city attorney of Augusta. Thomas S. Orr, his father, was the founder of the Augusta Female College, and was as well the architect and builder of the present building; he was a native of Virginia. William Orr, the maternal grandfather of John S., was a native of Pennsylvania, and was a soldier in the war of 1812. He married Miss Susan Buckner, who was born in Virginia, and was a daughter of Philip Buckner. The latter was a large land owner and a prominent man in the early affairs of Kentucky. He owned the original patent of almost all of Bracken and part of Robertson County. His descendants comprise many of the prominent families of the State.
