ABNER ADKISSON was born December 17, 1818, in this county, and is the
third son of Samuel and Mary (Perrin) Adkisson - the former a son of Elias
Adkisson, of Virginia, and the latter a daughter of William Perrin, also a
Virginian, and a soldier in the Revolutionary war. (See sketch of William
Perrin.)  Elias Adkisson came to Kentucky in an early day and settled in
Madison County, whee he died about 1825. He was a prosperous farmer, a
good citizen and a man of considerable local prominence.  Samuel Adkisson
(his son) the father of our subject, was born in Bedford County, Va.,
where he grew to manhood.  He came to Kentucky, locating in Madison
County, and after his marriage (to Mary Perrin) removed to this county,
where the remainder of his life was spent.  He settled in what was known
as Dry Valley, about two miles northeast of Clifton Mills, where he
improved a farm, and where he died May 1, 1839, at the age of fifty-three
years.  His wife was born in Virginia, and came with her mother's family
to Kentucky (her father having died) when quite young; she died in this
county in August, 1873, aged eighty-four years.  Abner Adkisson, the
subject of this article, remained with his parents until his twenty-second
year, receiving in the meantime a limited education, attending the common
schools of the neighborhood at intervals during the winter months.  He
commenced business for himself as a farmer, and about 1840 purchased a
farm near the village of Webster, on which he lived for over twenty years.
 He then sold it and bought another farm in the neighborhood, upon which
he lived until 1868, when he bought his present farm two miles north of
Webster.  He owns about 400 acres, and most of which is under cultivation
and is well improved.  He is a successful and prosperous farmer, and by
energy, industry and skillful management has accumulated a handsome
competency.  He was married, January 15, 1840, to Nancy, a daughter of
Andrew and Jane (Helm) Avit, of this county.  Seven children were born to
this marriage, viz.:  Lewis H., Andrew A., Simeon B., David G., Clinton
H., John S. and Mary.  Mrs. Adkisson died Setpember 10, 1869.  Mr.
Adkisson has never been an office-seeker, but takes an interest in the
political issues of the day and votes upon general questions with the
Democratic party; originally a Whig, upon the dissollution of that party
he, of the two evils, chose the least, and cast his lot with the
Democrats.  He is a member of Johnston Lodge, No. 294, A. F. & A. M., and
of the Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
