John Phelps received a common school education in youth, and was employed on his father's farm until he attained his majority. He then farmed on shares for two years, after which he bought a partially improved farm of 240 acres on the Green River, three miles northeast of Morgantown, on which he still resides. The farm is now well improved. He was married February 1, 1884, to Rebecca Johnson, also a native of Butler County, Ky. One little daughter gladdens their home - Effie.
