Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., Carroll Co. JOHN DEAN, SR., a native of Huntington County, Penn., was born August 16, 1800, and is the second son born to John and Jane (Whitnel) Dean, natives of Pennsylvania and Maryland. John Dean, father of our subject, served in the Revolution; he settled in Carroll County, one and one-half miles from Port Royal, now Carrollton, in 1810. He was a farmer, and died in 1835, at the age of eight-three. John Dean Sr., our subject, was reared on the farm, and educated in the schools of his native county. March 5, 1832, he married Susan Sarlls, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of Elijah Sarlls, an early citizen of Carroll County. Eight children blessed this union, viz: William E., Ollie, Richard B., Nicholas B., Julius B., Silas H., John Jr., and Mary E., the latter deceased. Mr. Dean owns about 300 acres of land in Carroll County, and during the war was for the preservation of the Union.
