"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 364-366. Used by permission. [Daviess] CLIFTON JUDSON ALLEN: This universally beloved and useful minister of the Gospel, who is at present connected with the Editorial Department of the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, at Nashville, Tennessee, was born in Latta, South Carolina, on November 1, 1901, and is the son of William Benjamin and Elizabeth Cox Allen. Our brother was converted in the summer of 1913, during a revival meeting being held at the Catfish Baptist Church, near the place of his birth, and was baptized into the fellowship of the Church by his brother, W. C. Allen, the pastor of the Church. He attributes his salvation, from the human standpoint, to the godly influence of his preacher brother, his mother and father, and his other brothers and sisters. Brother Allen attended the grade and high schools in his home town. He received the B.A. Degree from Furman University, in Greenville, S. C., and the Th.M and Ph.D Degrees from the Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. For some years before entering the ministry he served as Principal of the High School at Minturn, S. C. The last two mentioned degrees there secured after he entered the ministry and made scholastic preparation for that work. He was licensed to preach by his home Church very early in the year 1926. Having received a call to become pastor of the McHenry Church in Ohio County, Kentucky, he was ordained by his home Church on May 26, 1926. The members of the ordaining council were: W. C. Allen, B. F. Allen, W. B. Sherwood, C. A. Jones, and Samuel Long. He continued to serve the McHenry Church until September, 1929, when he resigned to accept the care of the Utica Church in Daviess County, Ky. He succeeded in causing the Church to adopt full time work during his pastorate and the Church has continued such to the present day. He finished his Seminary work while serving the Utica Church. For a time he served as Fellow in the department of New Testament Greek under Dr. A. T. Robertson. From Utica, Brother Allen went to the First Church of Fairmount, N. C., serving as pastor there from August, 1932, to March, 1936. He served the Western Avenue Church, in Statesville, N. C., from April 1936, to July, 1937, when he resigned to accept work with the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. His first connection with the Sunday School Board was in writing the Doctrinal Lessons for the Senior B. T. U. Quarterly in 1933. He also prepared the expositions of the Sunday School Lessons for the Teacher for the last six months of the year 1936. Immediately prior to his coming into the employ of the Board, at the request of Dr. Hight C. Moore, Editorial Secretary, he reviewed the entire series of Graded Lessons, making suggestions for revision. Since July 1, 1937, he has served as the Associate Editorial Secretary of the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, during which time he has labored largely in connection with the Sunday School periodicals, particularly in writing the materials for the Adult Quarterly. He was united in marriage to Miss Hattie Bell McCracken, of Columbus, Miss., on August 22, 1930. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. McCracken. They have three children: Judson Boyce, Rosalind, and Robert Moore. Mrs. Allen from the time of her young womanhood has been actively engaged in Christian work. During her college days in Mississippi she did field work for the State Mission Board. Following a year of training at the Woman's Missionary Union Training School in Louisville, Ky., she served as educational director of the First Baptist Church at Hartsville, S. C. Leaving there she came to Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn., from which she received the M.A. Degree in 1928. During the course of her studies there she served as Editorial Assistant in the Training Union Department of the Sunday School Board. Recently she prepared a Training Union Study Course Book, "Living For Jesus," for Junior groups, and at present she is assisting her husband in the work of the Primary and Junior Graded Lessons for the Sunday School. In every way she has been a valuable assistant to her husband. We predict for them an increasing usefulness in the Master's work.
