[Daviess] LUTHER WILSON CLARK: The call of our country for men to serve in the Armed Forces has now been answered for the second time in the lifetime of the brother whose name appears at the head of this sketch. He is at present (1943) serving for the second time as a Chaplain in the United States Army. He was born in Sevier County, Tennessee, on April 15, 1886, and is the son of Franklin and Hannah L. Clark. His educational advantages were good and he received his college degree at Clinton, Kentucky. He finished the work of ministerial preparation in the Southern Baptist Seminary at Louisville in 1917. His conversion took place in 1904 and he was baptized into the fellowship of the Bell Avenue Baptist Church of Knoxville, Tenn., by Rev. J. H. Sharp. After working for some time as a Hardwood Finisher for the Southern Railway at Knoxville, Tenn., he felt the call of God to preach the Gospel and his Church licensed him to preach in 1907. His ordination did not take place until the year 1911 at the First Baptist Church at Clinton, Ky., Revs. A. B. Gardner, B. M. Shacklett and R. M. Williams serving on the ordaining council. During his student days at the Seminary he served as pastor of the Utica, Seven Hills, and Dawson Churches, this was from 1914 to 1917. At this juncture in his life he became a Chaplain in the U. S. Army and went to France in that capacity, serving in France and Germany for a period of two years. He returned to the states in 1919 and became pastor of the Lincoln Avenue Church at Knoxville, Tenn. From 1922 to 1925 he served the First Church at Rockwood, Tenn. From 1925 to 1931 he served the St. Elmo Baptist Church at Chattanooga, Tenn., and from 1931 to 1933 he served at Sevierville, Tenn., at the First Baptist Church. At this period he was asked to take over the religious work of the Civilian Conservation Corps by the U. S. Army. Up to the present time he has served in that capacity in Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. (This record was to 1941). Our brother has served as Vice-President of the Tennessee Baptist Convention; as President of the Tennessee Baptist Pastor's Convention; as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Smoky Mountain Baptist Academy; and as clerk of the Knox County Baptist Association in 1921. He preached the missionary sermon before the Ocoee Baptist Association in Tennessee in 1927. While at Rockwood, Tenn., a new Sunday School addition was completed. A new building was erected at a cost of about $65,000 while he served the St. Elmo Church at Chattanooga, Tenn. Robin Martin and Hobart Chissom were licensed to preach while he served at Utica, Ky. L. L. Hurley, George E. Simmons, and Horace Meador were licensed and ordained at St. Elmo Church while he pastored there. Miss Loreane Tilford, a missionary to China, also entered into this work from the St. Elmo Church. Brother Clark was united in marriage to Miss Era Gardner of Beaver Dam, Ky., in 1916. She is the daughter of the late Rev. A. B Gardner, founder of the Kentucky Baptist Children's Home, Glendale, Ky. They have two children - Byron Franklin and Peggy Sue. His record of baptisms is about 1,700; marriages, about 500; funerals, about 1,000. His contributions to our denominational papers have been many and well accepted by the brethren.
