His grandfather, Elisha Ford, fought in the memorable war for American Independence. At about the age of twelve. Mr. Ford's father came to Kentucky, and in the year 1810 was married to Miss Nancy Gault, by whom he had nine children, John S. being the second. Brother Ford professed faith in Christ in his twenty-first year and was baptized into the fellowship of the Christiansburg Baptist Church, Shelby County, Kentucky, by Elder Abram Cook. The following year, in ]835, he came to Ohio County. Kentucky, and transferred his membership to Mt. Pleasant Church, Fordsville, Kentucky. In a short time he married Miss Nancy Haynes and settled on a farm in Daviess County, not far from Yelvington Church. He also removed his membership to this Church and remained a useful member there until the organization of the South Hampton Church, on January 1, 1855, when he became a constituent member of this new Church. He was soon ordained as a deacon and continued to serve in that capacity until his death, which occurred on July 2, 1879. He is buried in the South Hampton cemetery. In all the relations of life Deacon Ford was a model of propriety, and for forty-five years rendered a faithful service to the cause of Christ. He died in the full expectancy of a blessed immortality. His faithfulness as a messenger from Yelvington and South Hampton Churches is recorded annually in the minutes of the Association.
