"A HISTORY OF THE DAVIESS-McLEAN BAPTIST ASSOCIATION IN KENTUCKY, 1844-1943" by Wendell H. Rone. Probably published in 1944 by Messenger Job Printing Co., Inc., Owensboro, Kentucky, pp. 408-409. Used by permission. [Daviess] JESSE N. PHILLIPS: This outstanding pastor and evangelistic preacher was born at Lancaster, Tennessee, on January 1, 1892, and is the son of John Morgan and Julia Ann Phillips. He is a graduate of Bethel College, Russellville, Kentucky, class of 1918; Union University, Jackson, Tennessee, two degrees, in 1922; and has a Master in Theology Degree received from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, Texas, in 1925. Our subject experienced the grace of God at the Providence Baptist Church near Prices Mill, Kentucky, in July, 1907, under the ministry of Rev. J. C. Huff. He was baptized into the fellowship of this Church soon after his conversion. Before entering the ministry our brother informs us that he was a railroad fireman, a steam fitter, salesman, and a little of everything else but was firing a locomotive when he surrendered to the call of the Lord to preach. He was licensed on June 28, 1914, by the First Baptist Church of Teague, Texas. He was ordained by the First Baptist Church, Russellville, Kentucky, on October 26. 1917, with Revs. R. H. Tandy, W. E. Farrar, F. L. Hardy, George T. Clark, J. M. Farrar, and Homer Felts serving as the ordaining council. During his college and seminary days he served a number of country and village churches. In 1924 he became pastor of the Walnut Street Baptist Church, Owensboro, Kentucky, serving until the year 1929. He served the First Baptist Church, Henderson, Texas, from 1929 to 1937 and since that time has been pastor of the First Baptist Church of San Marcos, Texas, where he labors at present. He has served the denomination in many offices of responsibility and has acquitted himself well. He led in the erection of the $40,000 annex of the Walnut Street Church while a pastor here. The membership of the Church almost doubled. He has helped to ordain twenty-three deacons, seven ministers, and three young men have been licensed under his ministry. He has conducted sixty-two revivals and has seen over 2,500 people accept the Lord as Saviour [sic]. To date he has preached over 4,500 sermons, delivered over 2,600 addresses, and has baptized over 2,300 persons into the fellowship of Baptist Churches. He has spoken in over 160 Baptist Churches. He was united in marriage to Miss Grace Truman Tranary [sic]of Springfield, Tennessee, at thirteen minutes before six o'clock, December 13, 1919, so he informs us. This is rather accurate information, is it not. Her parents were E. H. and Lula Trenary [sic]. They have one son and one daughter. Brother Phillips preached the annual sermon before the Daviess- McLean Baptist Association in 1927.
