HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY KENTUCKY, by Robert Peter, ed. by William H. Perrin, O. L. Baskin Co., Chicago, 1882. Reprinted by Southern Historical Press, Easley, SC, 1979. Page 765. J. L. LOGAN, merchant, Athens, is the grandson of a participator in the memorable battle of New Orleans. His grandfather was one of a family of three brothers and one sister who came from Virginia to Kentucky at a time, when such a migration was fraught with extreme difficulty and danger. On the way, they were attacked by Indians, and in a fight the sister, as well as the brother, took an active part. The settled in Lincoln County, at a place called Logan's Creek to this day, and there those early pioneers lived, labored and died, remembered and honored as valiant subjugators of the savage wilderness and its more savage human denizens. The father of this pioneer family was killed by a falling tree, and the grandfather of our subject fell from his horse in a fatal fit of apoplexy. His son, James E., born in Lincoln, moved to Jessamine County, married Lucy, daughter of David Arnold, and of this union was born J. L., whose name heads this sketch. He received a far education, and at the age of twenty-one years began life for himself in the mercantile line. After being in business for five years at Nicholasville, as a member of the firm of Masters & Logan, he, in 1881, bought out the old stand of W. E. Christian, at Athens, and continued the large trade so long carried on by his predecessor. Mr. Logan is a member of the A.F. & A.M., and a young man of good address and excellent business habits.
