CARTER COLEMAN a native of the city of Frankfort, Ky., was born January 27, 1808, and is a son of Edward S. and Margaret (Blanton) Coleman, natives of Virginia and Franklin County, Ky., Mrs. Coleman being a daughter of Carter Blanton, a native of Caroline County, Va. J. Carter Coleman's grandfather, James Coleman, who afterward removed from Virginia to Woodford County, Ky., was in the Revolutionary war and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis. J. Carter Coleman received his education in a private school and when about eighteen years of age, became deputy United States marshal, under his uncle, Chapman Coleman. When Jackson became President his uncle was turned out, and J. Carter quit, after serving between three and four years. Under James T. Moorhead, governor of Kentucky, he was appointed sergeant of the court of appeals, continued in office about ten years and afterward wrote in the office of the court of appeals. He married, in September, 1832, Miss Ann Eliza Mills, a native of Todd County, Ky., and thirteen children were born to them, of whom seven are living: Edward J., John M., Sallie J., Lou, Landon S., Jacob and Emma. His wife died in August, 1879. He was elected magistrate after the new constitution was adopted and served four years. He is a member of the Christian Church.
