JONES was born in Mercer County, May 26, 1844, and is the only son of David W. and Frances (Hawkins) Jones. David W. Jones was born in Mercer County, Ky., November 1, 1807, a son of Samuel and Elender (Ryne) Jones. Mrs. Frances Jones was born in Mercer County, Ky., is a daughter of Francis Permelia (Shelton) Hawkins, and a sister of Col. Medley Shelton. Grand- father Hawkins was born in Culpeper County, Va., and died at the age of eighty-two. Colon M. Jones lived in Mercer County until January 24, 1867, then moved to Franklin County and has resided there since. He received a common-school education, and has been a farmer and trader all his life. He makes a specialty of fine horses, but also deals in mules, cattle, etc., shipping South. He made his first trip South in 1869, and has been shipping ever since. November 9, 1865, he married Dee Green, of Franklin County, daughter of N. P. and Patsey (Brown) Green, a sister Gen., Judge and Capt. Brown. He is a member of the Methodist Church South. As a citizen he is popular, companionable, public-spirited, and enjoys the respect and confidence of all who fall within the sphere of his acquaintance.
