(now West Virginia) was born March 3, 1802, and is the eldest son or Robert and Jane (McClung) Steele, natives respectively, of Augusta and Greenbrier Counties. Robert Steele was born September 19, 1766; was a deputy collector in Virginia and a revenue officer; was married September 14, 1797, came with his family to Woodford County, Ky., in 1813, removed to Franklin County in 1818, and died February 21, 1842. In 1851 or 1852 he was appointed superintendent of the improvement of the Kentucky River by the board of internal improvements, and he held the position about thirteen years, but in the meantime was engaged in farming, which occupation he permanently adopted in 1867. November 1, 1866, he married Mrs. Mary (McDowell) Pilkington, born within three miles of Lexington, and the mother of three children: John, Kate and James McDowell. The Captain's farm contains 214 acres, the greater part bottom land on the Kentucky River. The Captain is a Free Mason, but his advanced years preclude his attendance at lodge meetings.
