Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Franklin Co. J. M. WAKEFIELD was born in Cattaraugus County, N. Y., August 24, 1836, and is the only son of E. and Angeline (Dogg) Wakefield. His father was born in Massachusetts, was a son of Jonathan Wakefield, and was a farmer, school teacher and Baptist preacher. J. M. Wakefield was taken by his parents to Ohio when eighteen months old and lived there four years, then was taken to Nicholas County, Ky., then to Bourbon County, then to Madison, then to Estill, and in 1866 moved to Franklin County, Ky., where he has ever since resided. He now owns three saw mills in Franklin County, and is a wholesale dealer in lumber, sash, doors, etc., and ships lumber all over the United States. He also manages his farm of 356 acres. He married, March 3, 1856, Sarah J. Moore of Madison County, Ky., daughter of Garrard and Elizabeth (Laystor) Moore. Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield had no children of their own, but reared Virginia Moore from the age of five years until 1878, when she married Isaac T. West and had two children: Sarah M. and James B. Mr. and Mrs. Wakefield also took Garrard Moore to rear when he was eight years old, and he still remains with them and is now eighteen years of age. They also took Mildred Moore to rear when she was two years old, and she is still with them at the age of twelve years. Mr. Wakefield and wife are members of the Baptist Church. He has been and is yet a very successful business man. In 1866, when he first came to Frankfort, he worked by the day, but is now one of the largest lumber dealers in the city.
