Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. JOHN M. FLEGE. Grant County numbers among her common school teachers some of the best in the state. Among all of them there is not one more popular, or who has made a more unqualified success of teaching than John M. Flege, of whom we write. Born September 9, 1863, he was the son of J. F. and Sallie (Woodyard) Flege, his father having emigrated to this country from Germany, and the son has inherited many of the stick-to-it qualities which abound in that race. He was reared on a farm, and went to school in winter at the common schools, where he received a good common school education, after which he became a pupil of C. C. Overstreet in his high school at Williamstown, and attended his school four years. He taught his first school at the Cartersville school-house, near this city, in the years 1885-6, and has taught five years in that district, besides teaching four years at Bracht Station, in Kenton County, and three years at Dry Ridge, and three more at Stewartsville. He has taught altogether fifteen years in the county and state, teaching five months of each year and farming in the summer, and has always held a first-class certificate. He is now classed among the oldest teachers, professionally, in the county. In politics he is a Democrat and has never voted any but that ticket. He was a candidate for the office of County Superintendent of Schools last fall, but was defeated. He made a clean campaign and received a good vote. He is now straight out for the whole ticket nominated at the primary from end to end. He is a Methodist, having been converted many years ago, and his name stands at the head of the list of church and Sunday school workers in Grant County. Mr. Flege was married May 21, 1889 to Miss Fannie Blaine, to which union there have been born six children, three boys and three girls, all of whom are living, and who are bright, beautiful children.
