Souvenir Edition, The Williamstown Courier, Williamstown, Ky, May 30, 1901, reprinted September 19, 1981 by the Grant County KY Historical Society. J. R. LEMON was born in Grant County fifty-four years ago, being born on the 20th of August, 1847. His parents were Vance and Margaret Shields Lemon, and there were seven children in the Lemon family--four boys and three girls. The father was a farmer and Mr. Lemon followed in his footsteps, and became a farmer too. He was educated in the common schools of Grant County, and got a fair education. When Col. E. D. Webster was elected Sheriff of the county Mr. Lemon was appointed deputy and served in that position for four years, with credit to himself and employer, serving between the years of 1887 and 1891. In 1892 he made a race for the office of Sheriff, and was elected by a big majority over his closest opponent. He was re-elected when the first term was finished, and served another as Sheriff. The office of the Sheriff was then for two years, but has since been changed to four-year terms, like the other offices in the county. When Mr. Lemon's political life had come to a close he was chosen by the Board of Directors as cashier of the Grant County Deposit Bank, and served in that position for three years and six months, adding popularity to an already popular institution. Mr. Lemon was married to Miss Isadora Smith, May 13, 1880, and they are a most happily married couple. No children have blessed their union, but they have an adopted child which they are rearing as their own. In politics Mr. Lemon is a Democrat, tried and true. He has always followed where his party councils led, has never refused to aid in a campaign either in work or in money, and is also a silent worker in many another worthy cause.
